718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

I’ve spoken to my OPC this morning and they claim they knew nothing and have no clue of their allocation and therefore if I have a chance to get one or not. Cosmic

 
Porsche GB don't know their allocations yet, so the OPCs don't either. The numbers should filter through over the next couple of weeks.

 
Given the price of the clubsport pack i'd be tempted to go with it. By the time you've bought the harness and brey krauss bar , probably not a great deal in it, given you get a half cage and fire extinguisher thrown in. If my Cup sells i'd be very tempted(assuming i could get one anyway) , though i'd be torn between a 992 Carrera (when they get round to launching it) or the GT4 . I don't hanker for options , i just spec'd a GT4 with Clubsport pack , Buckets and chrono and it came out at about £85k . Knock off the clubsport pack 82.5 ish.

 
I don't think the Cayman needs the Clubsport pack - £3k for a half cage and a harness seems daft, especially as it's a steel cage adding weight up top for minimal benefit. The chassis is pretty rigid as-is. For track work, £80k seems good value for a brand new warrantied car. Used 981s should drop in price and I think there'll be an opportunity to pick one up below list and mod it if that's your bag, which would also be good value for something tailored to you personally.

I specced one up as a road car with some trinkets and I'm at £94k. Steep, but it's a brand new 4.0ltr 420PS car with a manual gearbox - rarer than unicorn tears.

Now, how long am I going to have to wait to be told "sorry, no, you can't have one"? :p

I didn't put the clubsport pack in my £86.5K spec but think I would add it if I did a serious spec. Therefore I would be up to £90K! Plus nearly £2K of road tax! Generally I don't hanker for options either but after sitting in mine with leather dash and others without, I think it's a must for the 'nice place to be' feeling. And for road use I think the reverse camera option would be really useful this time (not available on the 981).

Saying all that, I have no urge to change and won't be enquiring about one at this stage. However, if things settle down next year and there is availability as they are trying to promise and if (a big if I know) they offer PDK as an option, I'll be asking about one.

 
£94k..?! I know it's easy to get carried away with options, but if you're prepared to forgo a couple of hideously expensive plastic chairs you can get a very nice spec for about £80k, and that's including essentials (for me) such as leather, PDLS, climate control, cruise control, rear park assist, dimming and folding mirrors plus a couple of other things. And that's including Ralph's deviated stitching..!

I know that the Full Buckets are considered an "essential" fitment by many but really, the standard Sports seats Plus are perfectly acceptable for road and track - and they're a no cost option too..!

My email today was met with a "We will of course give your enquiry due consideration". Right - that's put me in my place then..!

The frustrating thing is not being able to get on the order list - refused by 2 OPCs. I’m not open to paying a premium. New to Porsche ownership (with the exception of a very old 944 a number of years ago) hence am not a valued customer!

 
I'm not so sure Ralph. If you have no relationship with an OPC whatsoever you may struggle to get a car as there won't be enough for absolutely everyone who wants one. I think if you do have some sort of relationship, and are prepared to wait, you may well be in with a chance.

 
Well, I've had a good relationship with the same Centre and salesman since I bought my Cayman nearly 10-years ago but it didn't count last time round and I'm not yet convinced that I'm in for a shout this time either, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm of the opinion that unless you're a 918 Spyder owner, a Porsche GT car owner who's willing to trade-in or you're a serial purchaser of Porsches your chances of being anywhere near the top of the list are remote. It seems that the 718 has quite a few years to run though, so it's possible that we'll see more GT4s being produced than last time around.

I don't think you'll need to be at or near the top of the list, there will be a reasonable number of cars. Over 600 made it to the UK last time, which is roughly 15 cars per OPC. Depending on where your OPC is and how busy/popular it is you might be OK.

 
It's been a long wait but the new GT4 is finally here.

As an owner of a "clattery four banger" [;)] I must say I'm a tad underwhelmed. No PDK option, as yet anyway, and I'm not sure if the new GT4 is enough of a leap to entice owners of the 981 GT4 to change. At potentially around £90k with options, it's an expensive Cayman.

With the GT4 being a track focused product, I'm surprised that PDK is deselected. It's a fact that on the track PDK is not only faster by a considerable margin, but allows the experienced driver to concentrate on the braking, turning, and steering control. At least the new 4 litre n/a engine revs to 8000rpm which should please all who appreciate the flat-six howl, including myself.

I agree with Ralph about the future tuning potential of the 718 flat-4 turbo. Given a few years, when prices drop for the current 718 Cayman S/GTS, there is in waiting an ideal modified track day tool at a bargain price. This engine has great potential for upwards of 430ps and 500 Nm torque. Such a car equipped with Cup 2 tyres has the potential to embarrass the GT4 on the track for a fraction of the cost. That said, a 718 flat-4 turbo will never be a GT4 and that is important to most.

Agreed Brian, but it's good that there's now an alternative to the excellent flat-4 turbo offering; and you have to take your hat off to Porsche for choosing to go against the grain by introducing a large-capacity n/a engine..!

As for a PDK option, I'm sure we'll be seeing it offered once GT4 production in under way - probably some time next year?

Just some general observations:

As always, Porsche have been tinkering with body colour options. I rather liked Saphire blue on the GT4 but it appears to have been replaced by Gentian blue, which I've only seen pictured on a 992. Has anyone seen it in the flesh on a 718 Cayman or Boxster?

It looks as though you can't spec a leather/alcantera interior without contrasting stitching - £834 just to change a bobbin on the sewing machine.! It's rather odd that the cheaper Sports Bucket seats are available on the Spyder but not the GT4, even if seat heating is probably more desirable on the rag top.

There's quite a bit of forum chatter about the increased weight of the 718 over the 981, some claiming 100kg (DIN). As far as I can make out it's more likely 40kg max, and maufacturers have had to tidy up their act so that the 718 weight is without any options. It's quite possible that the 981 weight was quoted with the small fuel tank and - who knows? - with the lightweight Full Bucket seats too.

Tech details are a bit thin on the ground, Porsche choosing to concentrate on the aero tweaks rather than chassis details (mainly carry-over with appropriate updates?) and the new engine which is based upon the 3.0L turbocharged 9A2 engine. I would guess that it has been bored and stroked to achieve a 4.0L capacity and will have been developed by the general team - rather than by AP's group - and would have represented a significant effort on their part, no doubt contributing to the long gestation period for the new car alongside the WLTP problems.

I see that the manual CGTS and CGT4 share the same max torque figure of 420Nm, although over very different engine speed ranges (2,100-5,500rpm versus 5,000-6,800rpm respectively). The torque limit of the 6-speed Getrag transmission presumably?
