991.2 Carrera 4 to 991.2 Targa 4

After 6 months of ownership of a latest spec 991.2 I have found that I have been missing the open top motoring I enjoyed with my past 4 Boxsters. Even the Glass Roof option it has doesn't seem enough for me.

I think that a full 991 Cabrio may be a bit too 'open' as I always thought the Boxster with its larger roll hoops did give the feel of something behind your head. So I am currently considering a 991.2 Targa 4 which I believe may be a reasonable compromise but would like to ask any owners on the forum their opinions and ownership experience. I know the car is heavier than the Carrera so expect performance to be slightly compromised, but how does the car feel after a few miles of touring with the centre panel stowed. Is there any significant buffeting or unpleasant noises for front and rear passengers (read grandchildren)?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Regards
David

Update.........

Following some lengthy investigations, I took the eventually plunge and on Saturday 29th October, took delivery of my new Targa 4 S from PC Tewkesbury. Special thanks to Will Collins Sales Executive at the Centre who helped tremendously well with the whole purchase experiance and was able to turn the car around in a very speedy 24hours to enable collection Saturday afternoon.

So far I am still grinning from ear to ear, I absolutely love it!

Let us know what you think I have a GTS coupe and was really torn between that and a GTS targa which was ??????????????????

I would also be interested in your experience of the Targa.

I enjoy open top motoring around France, but the autoroutes requires a little more over ones head than the rag top.

So far I really like the roof system, and haven't found the driving with roof down too noisy or any bad experience with buffeting.

I am off to North Wales this weekend and will be meeting up with R6 on their Sunday Drive around Snowdonia, so hopefully will be able to experience the car better on these journeys ..... weather permitting of course!

Hi 6DW

the weather has been a bit mixed today, but the sun came out in Cheshire by early afternoon.
I spent the afternoon checking out a Targa 4S, over the top spec, but low mileage on a 2015 car.
how did you get on?
any more feedback would be greatly appreciated.

ps any idea what was the Porsche warranty on 2015 cars?

Hi Monty911,

Had a great weekend in North Wales, Saturday & Sunday were quite sunny on the coast, so took the opportunity of having the top open quite a bit. Absolutely loved the car, and I didn't find it at all noisy or felt any buffeting from the roof. It seems that the front deflector has a two stage operation and the highest one needs a manual press to get it fully extended. Unfortunately I needed to take my full sized 88Key keyboard, stand and stool up with me which just fit on the rear shelf so therefore I wasn't able to have the roof open as it used up the storage area for the centre top. Then coming home it was cold, bleak and wet, so I wasn't able to try how the open top would be on a longer high speed run.

Have you been able to get a test drive in a Targa yet? So far I can recommend one, I am very pleased with mine. I said after the four open top Boxsters I had, then a 911 Coupe, this Targa is a great compromise.... My wife, didn't think that "Compromise" was the right word though, but you get my drift :)

Regards
David

Thanks David

I managed to drive one on Monday, nice car with the power kit and therefore had 430hp available. Unfortunately we couldn't agree on the price. So more searching required.

all the best

Hi Monty,

Are you looking for New or Used, and would it be 991.2 ex demo type car or a 3.4/3.8 N/A power unit?

Regards David

Hi David

Well you have cost me a lot of money! After three test drives, roof up, roof down and then a 45 minute trip around home ground, I have a rather nice Christmas present.

For others that fancy one, the wind defector has two positions. I very much doubt that the journalists played around with the settings before writing about the noise and turbulence. I found that the lower setting produced a booming effect in the cabin, however lower the windows by an inch and it goes. The upper position produces more noise, but less turbulence. However, back to back drives of my old 997s cabriolet, I thought very little difference with the hood down. But much better when the roof was closed in the Targa.

Thanks David for your comments, and all the best for Christmas.

Monty

PS it is a 3.8 N/A with PDCC, photos to come!

Hi Monty, Pleased to hear you have taken the plunge with the Targa. I would be keen to see the photos when they are available and to hear about your experiences with the car as you use it.

I joined in with the North Wales Porsche Club Sunday drive a few weeks ago around Bala, Porthmadog and on to Caernarfon to view the poppies at the Castle then a meal with about 40 members. It was a great trip so hope to join them again in 2017. Maybe you would be able to join in as well and swell the Targa numbers.

Kind regards
David

I can vouch for the 991.1 Targa GTS (manual Box)....just a year old and just over 10,000 miles....lovin' it

if you're in 2 minds about the Targa.......go drive one especially with the roof down

Hi Monty,

i assume that you have collected the Targa by now. What do you think of it? Have you done many miles?

Can we see some photos of it please.

Regards David

Hi David

Here is my new toy, I have now done in excess of 250 miles. I have even had the roof down, I am still playing around to get the right balance of noise/buffet, even at 2' it is more pleasant than my '99 Boxster.
I am not using it whilst the salt is down, but will be treating it with a full Nanolex 3iHD machine finish protection from Cheshire Auto Detailing Knutsford in February . I am going to Portmeirion next month for the Sunday lunch, hope to see you there.

Mike

David

This is the old one, I had it for just one year. I managed 8000 miles, including four months in France.
I can not wait to take the Targa, that will be in April for a couple of months.

Mike

Hi Mike,

the car looks stunning, a lovely colour combination, I am sure you will be very pleased with the "top off" motoring especially the forthcoming trips through France. Mine is quite dirty at the moment, I need to give it a good underbody wash and clean asap. We used it to go up to the Lodge in Wales for New Year and haven't had chance to sort it out since we returned home. I do hope to book in for Lunch in Portmeirion in February, it's a shame that our place is closed from now until 1st March, so it either has to be a day trip or some alternative night stay to make it easier.

Look forward to seeing you all then.

Regards
David

Hi steeve quite a substantial sum although I must admit it is a car that I do have a hankering for. Would be really good if they did a real turbo version I think then I might be very very tempted. I see in your picture you have what could be a early targa?
