Help identifying the specific model of 911 from a photo

Hi everyone I’ve been a member of R8 for about 4 or 5 years now so thought I’d try here first incase we have a keen eyed member who can identify the specific model of this 911 by a photo.

It’s the first Porsche I ever rode in back when I was 8 and belonged to a family friend who’s since passed away (This is no longer accurate because the person I thought the owner was probably not the owner)

I tried looking up the number plate but it appears to be unrecognised no idea why.

I know the rally car pictured which I was also fortunate enough to go in is a 911 SCRS which won the 84 MERC.

Looks like a supersport or a turbo with those wide hips.

Thanks Deano do you know what model year it’d be? I guess it’s a G body ? I love the air cooled 911s but am rubbish at any differences especially from the 70s up until the 964.

930 if it’s the turbo in that case then and do you know what the full name of a super sport was I’ve not heard of that.

I think the photo was taken in 89. it was a bit worn then but absolutely went like a rocket

Ian,

It looks like a 3.2 Carrera Super Sport (1984 vintage?). I think the Turbo might have had twin tailpipes whereas the pic looks as though there’s just a large single pipe?

Cheers Jeff I’d not heard about that super sport version of the 930 sounds really interesting a normally aspirated 930. The owner of the car was the owner of Prodrive and so owned the rally car there and a number of other Porsches including a 924 carrera GT.

The car in question was a bit worn you can see in the photo too around the front bonnet and rattled a little inside. It’s strange it was worn in just 5 years if an SSE I expected it to be a 70s car.

I also wonder given the background whether it was used as some kind of testing as it was savagely quick, more so than the 924 carrera GT I remember not being able to pull my head forward off the back of the seat so not sure what they’d done with it if it was the SSE

I would agree Supersport.  However, many a 3.2 Carrera had the wider arches attached to make it look like a SSE or Turbo look as they were called.
The following I think you will find of interest

I agree with what has been said also the Silver car in the background might have been mine in a previuos owners care it is a 924 Carrera GT a  very rare car even rarer in silver with champaigne white Fuchs since new, Ricky Ceasar owned it before me.

Thank you that’s a really handy link it looks like it’s an SSE 930 then unless it was a modified car though given the other cars in his collection I doubt he’d be bolting wide flares to a normal 3.2 but he had managed to make this car very used in five years.

Do you guys know if the engine and drive train in a 930 SSE are similar enough to an SC RS to test out changes and use as a test bed?

Amazing! Small world, that was a great car to go in too, I remember the mechanic taking me out in them all saying that was the one he liked best.

here’s a pic of it incase it’s the same one you have.

thanks for all these interesting replies I’ve learnt quite a bit from this thread.

maybe one day I can find that SSE if it is one for sure

If my memory of 33 years ago isn’t deceiving me too I think the chap who kindly drove me in these cars (I thought he was a race mechanic or driver due to the overalls but could be wrong as I was 8) was called Rick.

If the 911 in the pic was the “mechanic’s” car as well, it could well be Ricky’s proper 930 (i.e. 911 Turbo), as he has one of around that year (1987, D reg).

In which case that is a great pic from the past... the 924 Carrera GT is one of the most original cars I’ve ever seen and had the (very short) privilege to drive.

Although the reproduction photos are poor, that is a marvellous pic of Ricky’s Carrera GT

Ian,

Here’s a useful link for the SS:

https://www.porscheknowledge.com/911-supersport-sse/

It was just a 930 Turbo look-alike, with the Turbo body and running gear and the naturally aspirated 3.2 Carrera engine, so doubtful that it had any links to the SC RS.

It didn’t, apart from the fact that the 3.2 Carrera came after the SC.
SCRS was a different ball game, derived from SC 3.0 litre (of course) and very rare.

I see Ricky is running the 924 carrera register totally ignorant here but does anyone know what he did at that time? was he part of Rothmans Porsche? the overalls made me think part of the team like race mechanic / driver. Anyway it was an amazing day and what for me into Porsche which is what drive me to understand the black car as it was raw and I loved it (loved all of them) even though it was the least rare.

He’s always had a penchant for Rothmans Porsche clothing, a true enthusiast for the Porsches of the day like myself... that 930 is rare now, in the condition it’s in (and he still owns the car, amongst many other rare Porsches, which he bought ‘in the day’). All these cars are very special

Yes all amazing, just of the three being less rare than them but it had such character and remembering being asked my favourite at the time and it was that. maybe it was that turbo sudden kick up the backside too if it was the turbo then !

Ian,

Great to hear that you may be able to fill-in some historical gaps from childhood memories via the forum. It just goes to show how essential is this mode of Club communication compared with more in-vogue modern (SocMed) methods.

Reading again your comment that the 911 was “savagely quick”, it does tend to indicate that it was a Turbo rather than a Super Sport.

Yes, Jeff, more credence to the fact that it is a ‘proper’ 930
Lovin’ the old school Turbo...

Er, this might fall on deaf ears, as Ricky’s a little ‘new technology averse’
