I am seriously considering getting a 911. I am looking at 997 and 991, probably leaning towards the 991. I would like to know views in 2WD vs 4WD. Are 2WD safe or do they suffer back end issues when cornering. It is not my intention to thrash it around corners but I would like to know what the issues are. Are there any other things I should look out for or need to know.

Hi there, with 991 you don’t need to worry about spinning around as the PSM is very good and will protect you when you need it 99% of the time. The tyres are very grippy too. I had a 991 RS briefly and I couldn’t get it to break traction on the road even on cup tyres :) Personally I’d go for 2S over 4S but it’s good to drive both. I don’t know about reliability issues so others could chime in.
 
At under 11k on my 991.2 C2 I had to replace both turbos and the actuators on the PSE and the bolts holding on the exhaust tips which were almost rusted right through. Fortunately I hadvthem all replaced under warranty otherwise I was looking at £7k. These are well known problems on the 991.2. part of the problem is that all parts above are not encased and are mostly opened to the elements. Dirt get everywhere .Warranty is a must buy. You may think that it is expensive at approximately £1,250 but as you can see parts and labour to replace known problems are huge. You should check with the seller to see if any of the above work has been done.
 
Ive had both the 997 and 991. The 997 is a nice cabin and huge step up from the 996. As above, warranty isa good option but if you go that route you need to buy a 2009 at the earliest as this will only give you 2 years warranty before you cannot warranty it through Porsche anymore. So you therefore have the 997.2 facelift which has a few upgrades over the earlier models.
Both mine were 4wd so cannot comment on RWD. however you really would have to turn off the PSM and drive them in anger on a track to get them sliding about.
The 991 is a huge leap in the looks department in regards to the cabin, a lot more up to date and no doubt the handling will be even better as they evolved through development. My 991 had RWS so it was even more sure footed.

Both these cars and Porsche in general and very spec dependant in regards to what YOU personally want out of them.
Buy a bog standards 997.2 2 or 4S and have immense fun or buy a 991.1 2 or 4S at a higher price and have just as much fun but in different comfort.

Porsche cars really are a 'personal' choice when it comes to what you want from one.
 
I have had a 991.1 C2s since new in 2013 and have also driven a C4S. There is no doubt that 4wd sticks the car to the road better but the cost is the more complicated drive train. I have driven both on track and neither give any cause for concern for the reasons outlined above. Any car will loose the back end if you apply power when the car is unsettled. For the 991 if you turn off the traction systems the car gets more prone to being unsettled if provoked! Whichever 911 you purchase you will have to work out what is best for you and you would be well advised to get some professional tuition either on the road or on the track. Just enjoy what you get ??????
 
Take your time test drive a few before you decide try and find one with p d s s this makes it a very special ride

T`would seem to be a wise person who looks for advice from owners of a specific marque as to which model he/she should buy, though in truth it seems perhaps best to present a bit more of a CV than "not my intention to thrash it around corners" in order to get real benefit from the experiences of others...?
I think that by the time the air cooled 964 had been introduced in the late 80`s, Porsche had greatly reduced the tendency of rearward exit off the road by those who lost courage and lifted off the throttle at or near the apex of a bend..? It seems with the introduction of the 993 the suspension layout was further improved to reduce the tail heavy effect that some in the press may have over emphasised, and that was all rather a long time ago in terms of Porsche engineering advances...? However those who buy sports cars and might occasionally desire to derive a bit more pleasure by becoming a tad more involved with the machine as a sports car as opposed to just a rather smart form of transport, and might enjoy exploring both their and their Porsches handling characteristics...? In that regard you might enjoy watching the YT vid via the link below to hopefully provide you with an idea of that which you might enjoy in terms of your thinking on perhaps owning a Porsche..?

Glad you found some interest in that which I typed Ewen. When I click on the YT link in my on-site mail it works as it should. Perhaps your system has some sort of blocker. If you go to YT and type in
"Porsche 911 Carrera 4S evo review" you should hopefully get it OK and if you do not buy a Porsche after watching that.. I suspect you never will...(-:

I picked up a Carrera T in March, my first 911. You do feel the engine at the rear when pushing but not in a oversteery way. In the wet I would drive carefully as it feels more twitchy. Probably best to get one with a warranty if it's your first 911.
