GTS alloys peeling

Hi
Recently purchased my 2019 991.2 GTS, only done 7500 miles.
Didn't notice upon purchase but have now seen several spokes have coating peeling.
Anyone experienced this??

Agree with the above comment. The coating and the anodized wheel locking nuts are particularly sensitive to acidic wheel cleaners. I suspect you won't get much joy with your OPC as they'll say the same but could try based on such low mileage and age

Of course not owning the car from new you won’t be able to tell if the cars wheels have been refurbished at some point. I have used wonder wheels product for many years which is one of the better ones for removing brake dust but is a little on the aggressive side so not using as much now. However the product has never caused the problem you are experiencing.
From the pic it looks like a lacquer coat is failing, which would be an unusual thing to happen on a powder coated wheel as this does not require a lacquer coat unless diamonds cut of course.
It does kind of suggest a poor aftermarket repair may have been carried out on your wheels at some point. Highly unusual for this to happen to a factory finish wheel.

cheers

Steve

I was told by a detailer not to use Wonder Wheels because it is so aggressive and that might just be what's happened here. I now use Iron Out for removing brake dust (easy and actually very effective) and Bilberry wheel cleaner.
Hope you have some joy with the OPC.
Best regards

Although this doesn’t help the original poster, Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel is all I will use when I use an actual cleaner not just shampoo. You can also dilute it if you wish to.

Whilst harsh wheel cleaners can make the plated finish on bolts look nasty, the powder coating on the wheels should not be affected.

The TFR In these cleaning products reacts with bare metals - like the zinc plating on the bolts, but shouldn’t harm painted surfaces.

The peeling does indeed look like lacquer coming away. My best guess is that the wheel has had a repair at some time.

Thanks for all the help on this one.
it was indeed a bad repair before sale last year. Needless to say the garage is arranging collection to get them sorted.

Looks like a refurb where the wheels not been prepared properly.
Then maybe a harsh aggressive wheel cleaner or a to high pressure washer used.
If the wheels not been ceramic coated use a non acidic cleaner diluted if absolutely necessary.

Me too....I always buy the 5ltr version of Bilt Hamber Auto-Wheel from Slims (online). It's a bit 'whiffy' but does a superb job, without damaging your alloys. Here's the blurb:
Auto-Wheel is a powerful pH adjusted reactive wheel cleaner safe for usage on alloy, aluminium and steel wheel finishes. In over 90% of cases no agitation is required, let Bilt Hamber Auto-Wheel do the work for you.
Our wheels are under constant bombardment from hot particles such as brake dust and filings from the road. These can effectively bond with the lacquer on the wheel and instigate a build up of dirt. Whilst more traditionally used acid or alkaline-based wheel cleaners are effective they can attack lacquer and paint finishes if misused or left to dwell for too long - not ideal on an expensive alloy wheel!
Bilt Hamber Auto-Wheel works like an acid based cleaner but without the risk, it actively shrinks dirt and contaminant particles allowing them to be released from the surrounding lacquer but without causing causing damage to the wheel finish in the process. The reaction can be seen (Check out the video on this page) by a rapid colour change from clear to deep red. Along with a very strong degreasing action, a simple rinse or jetwash will leave the wheel spotless. Bilt Hamber Auto-Wheel delivers what we all want and that's sparkling clean wheels.
