Sports exhaust relacement

Hi Adrian,

If I recall correctly the PSE valves are vacuum operated - presumably to keep electrical connections well clear of hot metal? - with an electro-pneumatic valve in the engine compartment.

This link may be helpful to identify the components involved, or I’m sure there are online videos showing how to install PSE to allow you to reverse the procedure.

My recently purchased 2008 Cayman S needs a new exhaust system from the dreaded 3 bolt flanges aft. It has a sports exhaust at present, but I have a 2008 vintage standard exhaust (as new) which I would like to use if possible. Looking at threads on exhausts, most owners are finding ways to add a sports exhaust, so naturally there is not much advice on reversing this. If I do this, I'm wondering what bits I should remove with regard to valve actuation and where to terminate wiring etc.

Thanks Jeff, very helpful. Porsche exhausts seem to be an area of design that has remained stationary with regard to corrosion of fastenings. Apparently 1 year old cars are needing flange bolts replacing.

The wrong sort of “value engineering” I fear Adrian? Exhaust bolts and nuts last long enough not to be a problem under the factory warranty period, and new owners are unlikely to notice - or worry about - corrosion in that time.

You may want to consider farming-out the exhaust swap to an exhaust specialist who will be very familiar with dealing with heavily corroded nuts and bolts and shouldn’t charge the earth for removal of the old system and fitment of the new.
