Another different type of smoke issue

I've a 991.2 S and it drives and starts perfectly fine most of the time. However, if I start it from cold to move it, then turn it off, then leave it for a while before starting it up again, it sends out clouds of white smoke for a while. It doesn't use any oil, so not sure what it is. If I just start it from cold, there's no smoke if I leave it running or drive off. Seems to be something to do with starting, stopping quickly, then starting again after a while. Anyone my ideas?

Not being alarmist but normally white smoke is associated with coolant leakage into the cylinder, maybe due to head gasket failure. However, you’d expect that to happen under any circumstances rather than the specific one you’ve mentioned. Keep an eye on the coolant level.

A failing or failed air-oil separator can result in enormous clouds of whitish smoke. If your oil filler cap is very difficult to remove when the engine is idling due to high vacuum levels in the intake this is an indication of a separator fault.

Hopefully it’s just condensate in the exhaust turning to steam on start-up under specific conditions!

Hi Jeff, Thanks for your suggestion. Doesnt sound like it's normal. Sounds like I need to raise with the dealer. It does seem strange that it only does this when restarted after having been previously started briefly. No sign of anything if I start from cold; even if I keep it running without driving off. It really can be clouds of white smoke. Doesn't look like Steam. it's got the warranty so worth me reporting it anyway.

 
I’d agree Chris. Definitely worth booking it in for a check … a no brainer if it’s under warranty. Let them investigate and sort it for you.

If there really is a huge volume of whitish smoke it could well be a perforated air-oil separator. Oil gets into the intake duct and is sucked in and burnt off when you start the engine. Unfortunately it contaminates the cats, which is bad news, so it needs to be fixed ASAP if that’s the problem.

Spoke to the dealer - Dick Lovetts in Swindon. They said they've had this on this model and there is a fix that requires the replacement of some pipes connected to the Turbos. It's a big job since they have to take the engine out to do this. It has been done as a warranty issue. Car has been fine since.
