Centre Lock Wheels - Tyre Fitters

My local tyre place where I bought tyres for my previous Porches advised that they do not have the equipment to remove the centre lock 20" wheels on my 991.2 GTS. Anyone know of a reliable tyre fitter with correct equipment to do this in the Essex area - I'm Chelmsford based?
Or, does this mean I've now got to go OPC for tyres fitting and no doubt pay through the nose?

Hi John

I have just been through this with my GT3. Unfortunately, I left it a little late to decide to ditch my Cup2’s for PS4S’s once I saw the weather forecast for my visit to Millbrook.

My first choice a Porsche indi recommended on here, had a U/S wheel balancer. I managed to get a one day discount of 25% off the Michelins, but had to use one of their fitters. I did due diligence, and phoned to make sure they had experience of the wheels, which they assured me they had.

The tool key to remove them is in a plastic tub near the battery, under the plastic cover. The main problem is the required torque to tighten them. The instruction manual gives the details required.

I was horrified when I arrived at the fitters to find no one had any experience . Thankfully, I had watched a couple of YouTube videos to see the important points, a number of points are very different to normal wheels, eg the wheels must be off the ground when torque is applied. I stood over the guy and told him what Porsche recommends, he wasn’t that interested to learn something new!

If the garage has the wrench with sufficient torque, and you are prepared to stand over them it can be done.

Good luck.

I had a similar experience to mclark. I went to a Pirelli Performance Centre because they are supposed to have the tools and experience to deal with Centre Lock wheels. However, whilst they had the equipment they certainly didn't have the expertise. I had to go into the workshop and talk them through each stage. Using Clive's excellent guide you shouldn't go wrong if you have to supervise the tyre fitters.

Thanks chaps for all your responses and I will have a look at the thread on Living With Centrelocks!

i have used elite direct ever since i have been driving they do all my cars plus my panamera

You have a £100K car and you think that by going elsewhere other than an OPC is going to save you a few quid? If I were you I would check out the prices first at the OPC and then weigh up the minimal saving against the cost of the independent tyre dealer wrecking your centre locks or not doing the job properly. If you were to see what's involved when the Centre Lock Wheels are removed and refitted (as I have) you do not want some inexperienced tyre fitter who is used to changing tyres on a Ford Mondeo anywhere near your 911.

I have had a 991.1 GTS and now a 991.2 GTS, both from new, and have never gone anywhere else other than the OPC for the tyre replacements which were no more expensive than an independent , you also get the club discount with the OPC.

Totally agree with big cat I asked my OPC if they price match and they got very close plus they video the wheels before removal for damage etc.

They did slightly mark one of the wheels fitting one of the tyres (991 GTS so Black centre locks) but repaired it no hassle and because of the video it was clear when it happend

Things do sometimes go wrong but it how there dealt with that determines if u return

I would rather someone who deals all day with these type of wheels taking them offon etc.
