So the latest news in the Homelink saga is it suddenly stopped working just 18 months after installation.

It was Friday morning and neither garage door would open from the car - they had worked fine the day before.  Why do these always happen when you're in a hurry?

Both doors worked using their original remote controllers, which was a relief, so the problem was definitely in the fitted Universal Controller. With a bit more time, I pulled the front cover off the unit and probed around with a multi-meter. It turns out there was no juice to energise the unit. Mains power was live, so the problem had to be in the 12v power converter that feeds it.

A call to the original supplier produced a most pleasing result. I was offered replacement power source under warranty without quibble and low and behold, it promptly arrived the next day (Saturday). Great service from Easygates and full marks to them.

Turns out, the replacement unit wasn't a straight swap, since plug orientation was the opposite way around and the cable terminated in a coaxial plug, whereas the original is wired directly into the unit. So after some minor modifications and stripping the plug out, I switched on and everything was working fine once again. I didn't even need to reprogramme the Homelink buttons.

The new power source fitted.

Hopefully, the replacement will last a little longer this time.

Regards,

Clive

At last an explanation for all my unanswered questions!  I specced Homelink on my new Macan GTS and was disappointed to discover that I could get it to work the CAME gates (presumably 433) but not the Cardale garage door (868).  As I am not allowed to keep the car in the garage (wife takes precedence), I will continue to use a fob rather than risk life and limb trying to upgrade!
An important point is that at the point of sale, the advisor should perhaps be fully briefed about Homelink and its limitations, and be able to advise accordingly?
