OIL LEVEL GAUGE NOT WORKING AFTER FITTING ADDITIONAL HEAT SHIELD

Had the additional heat shield fitted on Tuesday at the OPC (eventually!)

Since then the Oil Level gauge does not give a reading, This has happened sometimes after toping up but in this case no other work was supposed to have been done and I have driven several times so oil has been well warmed up over several trips. Oil temperature and pressure remain standard values.

There is no dipstick so appears no other way to check the oil level so I am very concerned. I check the oil level every trip but now am unable to do so. Gauge working and registered level was fine when car went in.

Is there a wire or sensor that can become disconnected and has anyone else had this problem?

Grateful for any information before I take car back to OPC.

Cheers

Michael

Problem solved!

Went to OPC and demonstrated problem. Initial talk of needing new expensive replacement computer bits changed on insistence that problem appeared immediately after car returned from them and inspection wanted right away as no way of checking oil level.

Savvy technician opened rear hatch, removed plastic shields and associated gubbins while I watched from afar and ten minutes later car returned with gauge working.

Apparently two connections had become detached!

I wonder how that happened.

Is there a lesson to be learned here?

Cheers

Thanks for the heads-up Michael ??
Glad your issue was resolved successfully.

I have to say that since receiving the recall notice, the most sensible solution seemed not to leave oily rags in their in the first place but what do I know?

I'm due to have the heat shield recall carried out, next month, when the car is in for a service.

Crossing my fingers and toes that it all goes well, as it's a 200 mile round trip to my dealer and I'd rather not have to 'pop back'.

Hi Mark

I agree, who leaves rags in the engine bay when only a technician can get to it?

Particularly as you have a long distance to your OPC I suggest that you check that everything is working before you depart after the installation.

I once took the car in as although heat was coming through the fan wasn't working which they fixed but on leaving there was only cold air coming through! Fortunately I live nearby.

Cheers

Obviously some technicians are more diligent than others but, like the oily rag issue, anyone with a modicum of professional pride, double checks their work, before fastening things back up.

You might reasonably expect a laissez-faire attitude, at a back-street garage but less so at an OPC.

Overall, I've been very happy with the standard of work from mine - which, despite the distance, is partly why I choose them but I agree it's sometimes best to do your own checks, for added peace of mind.
