After market exhausts

Can anyone share their experience on this? I have a 991.1 C2s non PSE car and I’m thinking about adding some excitement in the exhaust department.

I have looked at installing PSE, Soul Performance, which I think I like best at the moment, dismissed the Akrapovic, as the price is ludicrous for my cars value and now come across Cargraphic.

My requirements are quite specific. It is my daily car with around 10k miles per year. It is also my track car, I do about 8 per year. I want more sound when I’m in the mood but I like how quiet it is now when I'm just driving to the shops.

It's important that it is not too loud to fail noise testing at the track and won’t be a public nuisance in my cul de sac when I go out for that early morning drive.

So what have you looked at and put on your car?

HI Jez,

I chose the IPE valved exhaust for my 991.1 TT.
It gives the options of open closed or auto
It is about 96dB at standard 1 metre test with valve closed and never trips a track noise metre at BH
Valve open is more like 115dB and louder in Sport or Plus
Sounds great from in and out of the cabin[:)]

Tony,

Thanks for your reply that sounds good. Which other systems did you look at and if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay and who fitted it?

Cheers

Jez

Might be worth giving Litchfield a call Jeremy. I was there on Thursday having the suspension mods done to my 991.2 and Iain said they're about to start manufacturing their own sports exhaust for the .2 — worth asking them if they'll have a version for the 991.1 too?

thanks. It looks like they supply the Akrapovic, which as £8,300 before fitting! The more I look at this the more I am leaning towards just having a PSE fitted. I heard the Cargraphic one at Parrs Motorsport and it was too bassy for me.

Having said that I think the whole a project has been down to COVID boredom. Yesterday I spent the day at Castle Combe and thought my car sounded great, so maybe I'll just save the money and spend more time on track!

They're making their own Jeremy. They've been supplying Akro and a Remus for a while, but had manufactured some of their own pipework anyway, so figured exhausts were the next step. They'll be a lot cheaper than the Akro …

thanks, actually, I'm not keen on a product which is a brand new design, untested etc. However I rang them and they said they would suggest Supersprint, which I've not heard of. Waiting for them to send a quote....

Yep, I can understand that.

If they have any mods to the suspension for the gen 1 991 I can highly recommend it! I am astonished at the difference it's made to my car. Had the KW springs fitted on Thursday, and they change the geometry so it mirrors a GT3 Touring. The front end bite now is unbelievable compared to how it was. What's even more impressive is there has been negligible change to the ride quality, despite being lowered around 20mm.

Your suspension settings sound amazing. I had a few passenger laps in GT3 on a day when I had been driving my C2s. The two stand out things were hearing it rev to 9000 and the turn in, which was on a completely different level to a carrera, so if you have the same that's incredible. Although there are two 'but's 1) although you can enjoy it on the open road, you are going to need a racing seat and harness on a track day, unless you have iron man core strength, to stay in a standard seat and for me personally 2) I deliberately avoided the lower settings as I have a lot of speed humps which I can sail over at the moment unless there is a sharp incline. Having said that, speed hump driving can be an art in itself for 911's. My technique is brake 5m earlier than usual then apply power to lighten the front end on arrival :)

Thanks Carlton, I've seen that one, it is a Soul Performance product not Porsche. This is a very highly rated make in the US, so much so that you can get it fitted in and OPC (which would never happen in the UK). It looks like a fantastic product. I have spoken to the guys a Soul Performance, and they seem to really live up to their name. So I am thinking about it.

I'll admit, I wondered a few times if it was a 'good thing' to do to the car. I was going to get it done last summer, and had second thoughts, then again earlier this year, and once again bailed. But now I've had it done I wouldn't, won't, go back to the standard setup. It's that revolutionary in the handling.

I drove to Litchfield (they're near Gloucester) and back in a day, and I live in West Yorkshire ?? 7hrs+ of driving, not to mention the full day in there having the work done. As I hit the windy roads near to home late Thursday evening, I upped the pace a little to see what the car felt like on a typical B road. Point the front where you want it to go, a smidgeon of trail braking, and it hooks the curve and stays pinned to it. The difference is night and day.

I know where you're coming from with the track day and seating. I have the sports seats+, which are marginally better at keeping one in place. I'm a rather scrawny 63kg, so I rattle around in the seat a bit anyway ?? But I maintain that with a cycling habit, so my core isn't so bad ??

The lower front is a concern I must admit, but as you rightly say, it's just a new technique to apply. I do like your approach Jeremy ??

Good to read your reply. 63kg - wow that's great for your power to weight ratio! ( I thought I was fairly light at 73kg) Not to worry if you move about the seat on track days, muscular ache the following day will be just another fond memory of the previous days' excitement. Enjoy your wonderful machine!

Try Top Gear exhausts. I had an x pipe on my 997.2 and it was well made and sounded great. Not too over the top like some other exhausts and good value.

I was the OP I'd get a Heywood and Scott bypass. Had this in my 997.2 and they do one for the 991.1 also. It replaces the centre silencer with straight pipes. It will be a quarter of the cost of the PSE and just as loud, or slightly louder at the higher rpms without sounding like a chav when you drive normally. Very easy to swap over to the original when you want to sell the car too.

thanks Nigel, that is the best value I've seen yet. I think I've come full circle and pretty much decided to do nothing! It's been fun looking though[;)]

Does anyone know about Brooke Racing Exhausts (BRE) please? They offer a very tempting looking inconel Cat-back for the 991 Turbo.

I've gone full circle with this and decided to keep my standard non PSE sport exhaust for the following reasons;
  • most of the time I want to drive around as inconspicuously as possible
  • I sometimes leave our small street early in the morning and don't want to wake anyone up
  • I have no problem with noise testing at any race track
  • It sounds amazing to me at high revs on track
  • Today I was at RPM Technic when they were moving around a 991.2 GT3 (very loud, too loud unless I really want to show off!) a 993 Targa (sound was a bit underwhelming) a 964 (sounded interesting) and my own 991.1 C2S (sounded the most lovely to me)
I guess we all have different tastes, but it has been fun doing the research!

Fair enough. It's great that we can develop the cars to meet our purposes. I'm after some more theatre, to ensure driving the car is always an event. So many options though!
