Hi,

I have just sold my 997 carrera S and want to buy a cayman GTS but unsure on 981 or 718 ?

I just wondered if anyone has any input for my decision or better still fancy a meet up to see your car ?

I am from Cumbria R22 but work in the North East a lot of the time.

Thanks in advance,

Mark.

Hi Mark I have not owned either of those cars but there has been an interesting article on you tube about these cars. If you go into you tube and type inJayEmm on Cars his Vlog will come up on the screen and he published it on 22 January this year. Hope this helps. I recently sold my beloved 993 Turbo X50 (it became a garage queen) and bought a 991 Carreras 4 GTS, and certainly the GTS package is very entertaining yet this cars still have their creature comforts. Good luck in your quest. Cheers Alastair

Hi,

I have owned a 981 Boxster GTS and a 718 Boxster GTS, I will give you my opinion but really you need to drive both and decide for yourself.

There is a lot written on here about the 718 engine and the sound is the main issue, Porsche have just not managed to get a nice throaty soundtrack and it really does not sound how a Porsche should sound.

Looking at the current prices you can buy a 718 for the same price as a 981 early £50k's so that should tell you something about how the models are perceived by buyers.

The 981 has a lovely soundtrack of pops and bangs in fact at times it can be a little bit much, the N/A engine pulls nicely throughout the rev range and I have often said it is probably all the sports car you need on our roads. If you buy one after a 997S you won't be disappointed. It is a very nicely fitted out car, I would make sure you get the GTS trim package as it really lifts the cabin and it drives very nicely not much will leave you on a B road blast.

The 718 moved the game on from a chassis point of view and the steering is also a lot better (this is probably the 981's weakest point) the cabin is a bit more modern and the tech is better. The downside as I mentioned earlier is the engine, it is not short of performance in fact in PDK form its numbers are better than the GT4 it pulls better from low revs because of the turbo and it does deliver. However you need to be happy with the sound and the turbo delivery characteristics.

That is just my opinion and after you have driven them both make your decision, but take into consideration the 718 is the newer car and if you can get a 2018 car for the same price as a 2014 car you are getting a much newer car.

Enjoy the test drives and let us know what you decide.

Hi Mark,

I have a Cayman 981 GTS and only have good things to say about it. They are absolutely fantastic cars. The “pops and bangs” are a bit pseudo, as is the “double declutch” throttle blip but they are mostly ‘switch-off-able’. My car is off the road just now but you’re welcome to have a look at it, should you wish. I am not in the least tempted by the 718 GTS (the GTS 4.0 - well....).

If you haven’t already done so, you should check out the Cayman forum and particularly Brian Innes’s posts about his 718 GTS. That should convince you that you really can’t go wrong whichever you choose!

Submit Post I don't have a GTS, but you can happily have a poke around my 718 if it helps?

I have had a 981 GTS (manual) for a little over two years and 40k miles. (After an R) I don’t track it, but use it for long journeys to fun roads around UK and mainland Europe, as well as general transport duties. It is very good at this! From the moment it fires up, to the point it is switched off - Yes! It performs well, has a bit of comfort, is smooth and sounds great.

Every car is a compromise and, of course, I am always looking at alternatives. I have had a 718 on loan and driven them at the PEC. Great cars and lots of performance, but for me the rough start up, idle and low speed operation is unacceptable in comparison to the 6 cylinder 981.

As for the GT4 and the new 6 cylinder GTS, I would have one in a heartbeat, but I would also be frustrated that I could not use the performance of the former, and be stressed out by mileage and stone chip phobia on all of them. This and the significant cost of change does not work for me at the moment.

In the bit of the real world that I inhabit, the 981 GTS is the best compromise for me, on performance, financial and emotional levels. I can’t think of another Porsche that would fit the bill so well.* I am based in Great Ayton and you are welcome if if you want a run out, or pm me if you would like to chat.

(*actually, the idea of taking a Panamera ST turbo to the south of France has incredible appeal, but it is too big to park in Sainbury’s.)

Update :

I was supposed to do a back to back test drive in a Boxster 981 GTS and a Boxster 718 GTS ( just to see which engine as i want a cayman) yesterday but the 981 didn't come in so i decided to take the 718 GTS Boxster out anyway !

Result = I loved it and am now considering the Boxster GTS 718 !

The spec on the car is amazing - white with black wheels, LED headlights, folding mirrors, PPF front end protection, lowered by 20mm sports suspension with PASM, GTS package, heated seats, Bose, cruise, front and rear parking sensors, auto wipers, auto dim mirrors and same price as a 5 year old 981...........

The jury is out.

Mark.
