Pleased to say that my plan worked. Drove as normal for a week or so and coolant dropped by about 750ml, which I topped up. Changed both filler caps, drove as normal for a week or so, checked the levels and no drop in coolant whatsoever.

I'll class that as fixed.

Hope you managed to get your fixed too Graham.

Cheers,
Bryan

Had the front wheels off 2 days ago to change the brakes so the chance to look at the cross tube ends.
All were dry as a bone, the car was run for some time the day before.
having topped up the system it seems to be stable, I filled to Max as it is hard to determine the fluid level exactly between max and min.

I hope this is the end conclusion, the fluid has never been topped up from new, there is no reference to fresh fluid in any of the detailed service invoices.
are both the blue caps the same?
might change them both just for peace of mind, and only 1/2 hour of messing about to get to the engine.
Graham.

No, the 2 caps are different :

996 106 447 04 Coolant expansion tank cap.
987 106 044 00 Coolant end cap.

I also ordered a new gasket, but didn't need to as it's included within the cap.
