987.2 Check engine coolest level light came on this morning

Pleased to say that my plan worked. Drove as normal for a week or so and coolant dropped by about 750ml, which I topped up. Changed both filler caps, drove as normal for a week or so, checked the levels and no drop in coolant whatsoever.

I'll class that as fixed.

Hope you managed to get your fixed too Graham.

Cheers,
Bryan

Had the front wheels off 2 days ago to change the brakes so the chance to look at the cross tube ends.
All were dry as a bone, the car was run for some time the day before.
having topped up the system it seems to be stable, I filled to Max as it is hard to determine the fluid level exactly between max and min.

I hope this is the end conclusion, the fluid has never been topped up from new, there is no reference to fresh fluid in any of the detailed service invoices.
are both the blue caps the same?
might change them both just for peace of mind, and only 1/2 hour of messing about to get to the engine.
Graham.

No, the 2 caps are different :

996 106 447 04 Coolant expansion tank cap.
987 106 044 00 Coolant end cap.

I also ordered a new gasket, but didn't need to as it's included within the cap.

Ordered the caps a few days ago from OPC Wolverhampton.
Collected them this morning....
Neither parts fit and the rep insisted they are the same cap, not two different ones. The caps could not be more different. I was given a new screen washer cap too! (well, it is blue..)

So...all the way back to OPC this afternoon. [8|]
How can this be so difficult?

Dear friends, tell me where you are ordering spare parts. Do you believe that it is possible to find a cheap resource online? I will be ordering them to my location https://areacodes.net/312. So I wonder if delivery costs would be acceptable or very high. What would you suggest? I am concerned that whatever I will save on the spare part will be eaten by the delivery costs. So hesitating what to do.

The joints are all dry so far. We had a good look when the car was up on the ramp.
However, I eventually got the right caps from OPC Wolverhampton and they are on.
Have driven the car about 200 miles since and the level (filled to max) is still there, but not many miles.
My fingers and spanners are crossed!

Graham,

Taking up your previous point about coolant level on the 987.2, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who finds difficulty judging the level. There's quite a big difference between the Max and Min levels, and pink fluid against the yellow markers isn't a great combination. Shining a light down the aperture isn't a great help either - usually I resort to using a screwdriver as a dipstick. I think the 911 has a float which rises with the level, making it much easier to gauge the level.

Jeff

Yes, the 'contrast' is non-existent. Sometimes engineering design seems so very weak at Porsche, a critical fluid level that's hard/impossible to measure!
I have a short dip stick in the 'locker' flap too...
Filling to the Max is the only way to get a correct level.

Hi there I have Had the coolant level low and temperature gauge fully to to right on my 987.2 3.4 a few times now , it seem to do it on days with the temperature over 25c , I have checked the coolant level several times and it’s not losing any water , all the front Front water pipes that normally leak on these were replaced 18 moths ago , the car has been ok then another hot day of 25c and above does it again , the needle shoots up to the red and says coolant level low , I have purchased a new temperature level sensor from Porsche has anybody had this problem with the sensor? checked water level today and it’s still full .. the car runs fine... Any help on this will be of great help ...

Hi Christopher,

Is there a combined coolant temperature and level sensor or are they separate sensors? If the latter then maybe that's your problem, the coolant temperature sensor being faulty?

I really don't know but since the problem only occurs with high ambient temperatures perhaps coolant temperature regulation is based upon both coolant and ambient temperature. I think the only way to investigate further is to run some Porsche-specific diagnostics [PIWIS or equivalent] to see if any error codes are flagged-up.

Jeff

My 987.2 2.9 did this and has not since I realised and fixed the front coolant pipe leaks.
I did nothing with sensors etc, just gave the car some long Rev pulls to make the water pump work hard and dislodge any air pockets.
Indeed, there must have been some as the level dropped, but since topping up, and about 3 30 miles runs the level has found its own settling point of mid way between max and min.
