Cayman S 987 IMS noise

Sorry to hear about your IMS bearing problem.

Hartech seem to be the go-to company for 987.1 engine rebuilds, so you've nothing to fear getting them to quote for the job. I've no personal experience myself (I have a 987.2 Cayman) but have spoken to quite a few Members who've had a positive experience in dealing with them for IMS and bore scoring issues.

Definitely give them a call and they'll be able to advise you about rebuild options, costs, etc. I think Cameron's advice not to drive the car is sound, and they could probably remove the engine and ship it to Hartech for repair.

Sorry if this has been done to death before, but my 80,000 mile 2006 Cayman S has just been diagnosed with a noisy IMS by Cameron Porsche.

They advise not to drive it any more as it could fail at any time.

They have also recommended Hartech to sort it.

Does anyone have any experience with Hartech or any other ideas/thoughts? The car is in otherwise excellent condition with full Porsche service history (last full service in January at Porsche Bristol).

This would be very unusual for an M97 engine. Very unusual.

If there is a noisy IMS, you would certainly expect metal fragments in the oil filter. This would back this up diagnosis. Has this been checked?

If the oil filter is clear I would question the initial diagnosis.

I hope the diagnosis is incorrect but on the ramp the thrashing noise comes from the IMS area. Not sure what else it could be?

 
There’s a lot of rotating parts and it is always very hard to detect which is the source. We normally use a stethoscope, but even this proves difficult. You gather clues and then try to prove the diagnosis.

The very first measure normally is to run the engine without the drivebelt. This eliminates pas, water, alternator etc - these are common causes.

If you fear starting the engine engine I think inspecting the oil filter is probably your only option.

I think the Cayman engine needs the cases split to change the bearing, unlike the earlier motors. I suspect some garages might not want to do that but Camerons have ex-OPC technicians so I'm surprised they don't seem to want to take it on.

Hartech are recognised as being one of the best Porsche engine rebuilders but there are a few others who are also very good, you don't say in your entry which part of the country you are in but I would also recommend Zentrum in Nottinghamshire.

John, did Camerons check for fault codes or do any live data analysis? I'm not an expert but if it's a bad IMS bearing, there might be cam timing related codes present. Where is the car now? If you wanted to check the oil filter and remove the drive belt to eliminate the ancilliaries as Lee suggested, I'm in the north Bristol area and happy to help with that if you want.

All they did was listen with a stethoscope. Nothing else.

That's an incredibly kind offer. I have no mechanical knowledge of these cars so any help would be much appreciated. I have a decent workshop with a ramp but it has my race car rebuild I am fiddling with for the next 2 or 3 weeks. But sometime after then would be great. I am at Horton near Chipping Sodbury. I'm not in any big hurry luckily.
