Zermatt 944 Turbo SE on E-Bay viewed today

Obviously I didnt post the linky as I was 'very' interested in the car ( in my fav colour) but I know everyone is well aware its on E-Bay now as a few of us have expressed interest at the right price.

I went to view the car today via a 4 hour round trip on the tube ! and got on very well with the garage owner. However the car is definately not for me so bid away , Mas has I assure you moved aside []

I have promised an honest appraisal if anyone who I spoke to the other day or who knows me wants one
( and pics) you are welcome to P.M / phone.

Basically it has rot on each panel on the drivers side I.E wing door rear panel , as well as the rear slam panel and boot itself. I will not get in to how the ad is worded versus what I saw as you can read the ad and see the e bay pictures yourself. The roof also has been cleaned all over with a couring pad or similar and is devoid of any real laquer. The bonnet is the best paint on the car. As a result of what in my opinion is a clear need for a total respray ( and new wings/door) its not for me. If you are interested in it as a track car or something you might like to go and drive it but if its to bring back to its former glory , you have my respect.

I remember the first one I went to look at was a 350 mile round trip, the garage assured me it was a great car with solid sill's and a recent head gasket.

Turned out it had been very carfefully photographed[] I arrived at the garage half an hour before they opened because I wanted to see it before I had to listern to their flannel, guess what it was sat there running and the really solid sill's were the lightweight version that allowed you to see day light through them. If that wasnt enough the laquer on every panel was peeling away at the edges and there was a long badly blown in the length of the car down one side oh and the door did not fit right.

In these days where we all have cameras in our phones and e-mail, I just don't understand why anyone would not be totally open about a car when advertising it? Surely it's better that someone spends money travelling to view it and is then pleasantly surprised, rather than disappointed? [&o]

I always over-describe cars that I sell (I buy and sell a few-mostly non-Porsches)-in fact, my Wife curses me for it.
Personally, I would rather that the buyer is:
a Pleasantly surprised, and
b If they get a good car, it doesn't come back with problems.

McNulters, I agree. Although I'm not sure how camera phones and eMail changes things; why can't a seller be honest about what he is selling? Deceit is only going to cause the potential buyer to be cross, surely?

Hubba - just read the ad on eBay and I get the distinct impression that he tried to pass off a fairly badly battered O/S/R wing as "The bodywork needs a little bit of TLC ... There is also a bit of superficial damage to the drivers side rear quarter and slight dent to drivers door". It appears that the seller only later added pictures of the damage, which amounts to a hell of a lot more than "a slight dent".

Having said that, if he knows of a bodyshop that will repair that lot to a decent standard for £350-400 then I want their number.

Truly shocking.

It just makes it really easy to be open with potential buyers before they travel; often at some cost.

Take close-up pics of every fault, however minor, and all weak areas like inside sills etc. Scan service history. E-mail the whole package to a serious enquirer and they can see what the car's like in far more detail; it's one thing saying that the "wing is a bit rusty", it's another seeing detailed pics.

It used to be that you put one bad picture in Autotrader because that was the only option. Things have changed now and there's no excuse for people travelling to see a car that's not as good as they expected. []

McNulters- sorry, I misunderstood; I thought you were referring to the fact that potential buyers all had eMail and camera phones.

Still not sure I agree - there is more to being truthful about a car for sale than simply posting non-misleading photos. Mas's post has no photos in it, but describes the car in an honest fashion. (At least, I assume it does!)

If I was posting a full and honest appraisal of the car and my opinion re the cost to me in time and money to go and view then I'd probably get an E-Mail from Paul or one of his colleagues asking me to moderate my post as forum rules and etiquette prevent it.

The giveaway should have been when they said the insurance company had paid out on the claim but the PO didn't fix the car.

If someone's not bothered about fixing a massive dent then they're unlikely to bother with more mundane maintenance.

Apologies - no harshness intended, squire. The comment was more recognition of the fact that I had two descriptions of the car; one from the advertiser, and one from you. I hadn't seen the car and trusted your description more than that of the advertiser (you having no vested interest and all that.)

I think that delightful picture of yours of the immaculate seat somewhat proves the point ... []

Eldavo - good spot! Hadn't thought of it from that angle. More evidence of the doggy-ness of the car!

The guy has blatantly not described it correctly. I asked for more info about insurance claim and the guy has told me its a Cat C write off. Looks like a turd, but suppose you cant expect much for that money.

At least I have done right by my fellow PCGB folk, I hope it didn't cause any problems as that was far from my intention.
