Would you get a boxster?

Yes, except I really want a Cayman. I don't like open cars as they make me feel vulnerable and I don't like people looking at me. Full cages for Boxsters are pretty cheap, now that it has become a race series, and they fit under the hard top. But then you have a heavier car with no advantage over a Cayman apart from price i.e. wanted a Cayman but couldn't afford it. Having chased both Boxsters and Cayman on track days don't let anyone tell you they are slow. I have had brief drives of both but, what I did notice is, they do the "go from A to B without involving you" bit very well. You get in, you get out and you are there, there was nothing much in between, similar to a Merc, in that respect. This isn't necessarily a good thing. Beaky makes me smile even just sitting in him, I don't think a Boxster or Cayman would do that. I haven't driven a Boxster or Cayman in anger so don't know what they would be like but I respect the comments of motoring journalists who have. They say good things, I have no reason to believe they are wrong. If someone was to make me an offer I couldn't refuse for Beaky I would have a Boxster tomorrow......but only until I could afford a Cayman.

Don't think us 944 owners can bandy around that sort of thing. People in glass houses etc etc.... Its an unfair comment against Boxsters just as much as it was against the 944 and 968 (even the 924). Someone made that comment to me a while ago about Boxsters and it turned out that he being such a wealthy indvidual in fact drove a Fiesta....[8|] A poor mans Focus ? []

Some interesting views, to be honest I do prefer the Cayman to the Boxster, slightly more powerful and perhaps more of a pure drivers car. I didnt ask would you get a Cayman because I knew I would get mainly positive views on it, by asking about the Boxster I can see what differences there are between it and the 944, it certainly seems a step forward from those who have driven both. I do love the fact that my 944 is a modern classic, something that the Boxster is not, at least whilst its still in production. For the forseeable future I'm happy with my 'practical' porsche and while perhaps a Boxster would be somewhat of a more polished and better performing alternative I'm not rushing to get one just yet... and besides it doesnt have pop up lights![] Edd

I thought Id posted on this thread, but it must have been the similar one on PH. I certainly would and Id prefer a Boxster to a 944. I havent owned a Boxster though and I have owned two of my three 'grail' frontrunners (M758 & CS with only the 937 eluding me). 986 and 987s have a model range which is similar to the 924-968 of course, so if you currently drive a nice 951 or 968 then an early 2.5l 986 isnt going to impress too much: here youl need a newer larger capacity car. To Edd: I think that an early 986S will satisfy your need for speed and newer models are better still... Simon

Hmmm.. interesting comment.. i don't particulary like such things especially when it's usually aimed at the 944 by the less educated amongst us( in cars that is... ) but it does have some substance to it when you consider that a new boxster today will cost you less than a 944 Turbo over 20 years ago.... food for thought don't you think...[][] Pete

Interesting to read this after a few days away. There's certainly a bit of the old "Milwall" attitude still hanging around the 944 owners, with a few "no-one likes us and we don't care" comments. I have never got the point of the question. Why would a Boxster be a replacement for a 944? Unless you are a Porsche addict, and have a desire to move on no matter what, it seems odd. I've never wanted a 2-seater mid-engined Roadster, so I've never bought one. I like front-engined RWD coupes with rear seats and a hatchback, or even better an estate, so that's what I'll buy next time. [&:] Boxsters are, no doubt, the best in class. Just not the class that fits my needs. To me, if you like a 944 you'll be unlikely to want a Boxster, rather a more modern car with the same layout. Obviously there are plenty of exceptions, that's half the fun. []

I see your point Paul, but I dont really think the 944 and Boxster are that different, they're both entry level Porsche sports cars, both are pretty much two seaters and they have more in common to each other than say to a BMW or other saloons (ie most other cars on the road). Surely its natural as a 944 owner to look at other models in the marque when considering a change? Especailly if you like the Porsche name, and I know not all here do, but I do. Its also the closet in affordability bar perhaps the 968. Less of a direct replacement and more of a change? Obviously if it doesnt fit your needs then you dont buy one, simples... Edd

Funnily enough I tend to agree with that now I've been around the Club for so long. I'd be more inclined to stick with a Porsche for that reason alone, rather than take a punt on the 350Z Owner's Club, or the Scimitar GTE Enthusiasts. [8|]

Good choice. Isn't it strange how these cars eat their way into your social life to the point where they impact on your life as a whole.

Must agree there, certainly part of my ongoing ownership of a 944 (other than the merits of the car itself) is the social aspect of owning one. If I do ever end up with another classic car I suspect the 944 will be remaining on my drive for that very reason.

I have got to agree - I bought the '44 because I wanted a relatively straightforward car to have as a hobby, to work on myself etc, but it has become so so much more than that because of the club and onto the forum. I've never been a 911 freak, I like the 356 because its always been old to me, the 924/944/968 was introduced when I was 16 and I spent lunchtimes walking past and drooling over first a 924 then a 924 Turbo and then a 944 for 7 years, the Boxster doesnt suit my eye (or pocket even now) but the Cayman does. I am so pleased that fate took me down the 944 route, its possibly the ultimate practical sporting classic. The car and the people are great. Mike

I got one!! Her indoors had an MX5 we swapped it for a Boxster S last Xmas, what a car!! It is brilliant say what you like about a poor man's Porsche ( I am a poor man, relatively) but floor that accelerator with the roof down it is excellent, but the best thing is it's still not as fast as my 944, if you can get one![]
