Winter wheel/tyre set.

Asked my OPC today about a winter wheel/tyre set for my Carrera T.

They use a Tyre Hotel at Porsche GB, Reading. Storage cost is quoted at £300 per year. Swap-overs are quoted at £60 per swap-over for the set (needed twice per year). Tequipment lists 19" Carrera wheels with winter tyres at £3,151 (excluding wheel centres).

OPC quoted £3,132 to include first year's storage, first two swap-overs and wheel centres.

How does that sound to those that run winter wheels/tyres on their 991s? [8|]

I run winter tyres on a 991.1 on a set of tech equipment 20" wheels I bought second hand for £1500. My tyre supplier quoted £70 for each changeover done at my house. I store the wheels in my garage in covers that cost £40 one on top of the other with the bottom wheel on wooden blocks, without any issue. I have now invested in a torque wrench, suitable soft wheel sockets, a low profile jack and a Porsche wheel guide for a total of £100. This has now paid for itself after two one hour sessions doing the changeovers myself without any real hassle. Pays your money ...........[8|]

Hi. I've been looking at the winter wheel/tyre sets offered by Porsche (Tequipment).

£300 for storage is outrageous even by porsche standards imo
i pay £50 twice a year for both BMW and porsche for changeover but storage is free for both
cost of wheel/ tyre seems about right though I paid £1500 for lightly used Porsche ones,same as new BMW ones
well worth it IMO

Thanks, dyllan. I am contacting other Porsche Centres for their best offers on wheels, tyres, storage and swap-overs.

To give you some benchmark on storage and swap costs, from Hatfield for my 991.1 GTS with centre-locks:
Prior to this Spring, I was charged £250 annually for storage and 2 swaps.
From Spring 2018, £398 for storage and 2 swaps. 60% increase . Not happy!

I shall sell the GTS this summer and flog the centre-locks separately (probably on this forum) so that car won't be a problem this Winter.

Incoming T in a week or so. Will be interested in what deals you have found for Winter wheel/tyre sets. The 19's are the sensible choice but I shall take 20's because they look ace.

I have now had quotes from four different OPCs, interestingly all part of the same group, and no two quotes are the same!?

Only Reading have not replied.

The best quote so far is from the OPC that is furthest from my home, so next week I'll see if my local OPC will match the quote.

I'll update on here once I've sealed the deal!

I too agree that 20" wheels look better, but having 19" wheels for the winters represents quite a saving, plus I'll be interested to see how the ride/handling changes on the slightly smaller wheel.

Considering the cost for storage plus the cost for fitting why not consider doing the job yourself !

This what I decided to do and put the cost towards a good car jack system which when not in use does not take up much room and I store the tyres on top of each other.

As havimg rear steering on the 911 C4S this does limit me in needing to keep to 20" rims so I got myself a set of Porsche winter tyre set Part number 991 044 601 36 (20-inch Carrera S winter wheel-and-tyre set painted in Platinum (satin-matt, Also includes centre wheel caps.)

The satin-matt Platinum alloys would complement the existing trim colour on the 911 T []

Have now found an OPC that don't charge for storage, which is handy as I don't have a lockable garage or shed etc.

And I quite like the idea of wheels that look a bit different from my 'summer' wheels, plus will be interesting to see how the ride/handling change when on slightly smaller 19" wheels. []

Have gone for a more local OPC. 10% PCGB discount on 19" Carrera wheels, N-rated winter tyres and wheel centre covers. No storage charge. Free swap-overs in Year 1. £130 per year thereafter for swap-overs.

It seems that some OPCs have limited storage space. It is these that appear to charge about £300 a year for storage and transport to/from the Tyre Hotel.

Well done Simon that’s a win win situation. I think you are correct about the storage limitation with the some of OPCs. When I originally enquired about winter wheel set storage with my OPC they were not able to offer the service, however I believe they offer the service now but it is chargeable.

Yep, my nearest OPC says they have no suitable storage space since they relocated to their new premises. They said that they're invoiced £300 per year by the Porsche Tyre Hotel for storage and transport, so they have no scope to 'sharpen the price'. They simply pass on the £300 charge, they say.

My dealer stores the wheels in a shipping container so not much cost to them- free storage for me but £199 per change = £398 per year. ??

Just to check, the £130 per year that you’ve been quoted: that is for 2 changes isn’t it? If so, then that’s a cracking deal.

Hi Paul. Yep, £130 per year including VAT is for two swaps, so £65 per swap. I double-checked! No charge for swaps in Year 1. And no storage charge, so I assume that they have on-site storage facilities.

Hi Paul. Spoke to OPC today. They've asked me to order & pay next week, so they can include in June's sales figures!

But am happy to confirm that Cardiff and Tewkesbury both came up with similarly good deals.
