Winter Tyres / Snow Chains / Socks

Thinking about making some winter trips to Europe. Just starting to look at requirements by country and consider options. Winter tyres only seem to be mandatory in Germany with snow chains required elsewhere.

My 987.2 has 19” inch wheels. Does anyone have any experience and recommendations for a set of winter wheels / tyres / chains?

Should I be looking for some smaller (18”?) wheels as a starting point or will chains work on the 19”?
 
Ebay is your friend.

Plenty of 18 inch official Porsche winter wheels and tyres on there. Just be wary of tyre age and tread depth.

Depending on where you go they aren't always required for example, they aren't required in Switzerland but you are expected to ensure your car is safe and roadworthy during the winter months.

Are winter tyres compulsory in European countries?

They are not compulsory everywhere in France but what about other European countries? What are the risks od driving winthout winter tyres?
