Wing Mirror vandelized

997London

New member
Came out this morning to find out some so and so has half-knocked my wing mirror off. It is still attached and electrics work and mirror glass not broken. But whole unit is pointing upwards now and pulling back the unit I can see one of the metal parts holding it in place has sheered off.

Just wondering if I will have to buy a whole new wing mirror or just the mounting point to re-attache mirror. Also if there is a DIY guide anywhere for removing and re-attaching a wing mirror. Can't be too hard.

This also happened to a 987 owner , the wing mirrors are the same part so the procedure will be the same. The painted cover needs to be removed first then the mirror glass and then the interior trim on the top of the drivers door. The mirror wiring can then be disconnected, the fixing screws removed and mirror detached. The mirror arms (frame) are made of aluminium , this is what has probably broken. Be careful when ordering a new part as you need to specify if the car has auto dimming mirrors , memory seats, and if its for the driver or passenger side of the car. The part is about 120 pounds I beleive.

Hi thanks for your reply, was getting a bit lonely with this posting. I have had the part id by my local indie by the chassis number so sure it is right part, I sent him a photo of the damaged part and he has said it will be just under £120 so you were right. Just glad it was the whole unit and mirror not broken as would have been around £500. They said would be about half hour job (£37 plus vat to fit it for me. I really want to fit it myself as don't mind getting my hands dirty but I have had a look on the internet and can't find any instructions for doin so. I have had a good look at the door and the mirror and there are no obvious clips or screws visable to start the disassembely. The mirror housing looks very solid and not very easy to prise apart, same for interior part of trim on mirror. I don't wanna cause damage or scratches to this doing it myself. Do you know who it was who replaced the mirror on their boxter or has anyone else done it. I have looked several times for a Haynes type car manual for the 997 but have never found one. I assume there is not such a demand for this book. But does anyone know of one or internet site or could I try a PCGB contact to help me out for tech advice?

To be fair, I'm not aware of that many 997 owners that would contemplate trying such a repair.. Indy would be my first port of call or Renntech to see if they have any info. I'm not sure if we at PCGB have a 997 manual, Richard over in the 996 area usually has a good understanding or possibly some drawings that may show things. garyw

Manuals are available from Porsche but are charged per section . There are other sources to obtaining this information , I'd suggest a search of MANUAL and WORKSHOP in the [link=http://www.renntech.org]www.renntech.org[/link] forum may reveal some leads...

If it helps, you can download the model-specific PET from https://techinfo.porsche.com for the 997 (and all other models). It's obviously not a workshop manual, but it may help to identify the parts required. Regards Dave

Thanks for all the advice, I am getting it done at jZmachtech tom, part is 120 but labour to fit it in half hour is going to be £37 so worth it as dont want to damage my trim by trying to do it myself. Also going to get some official Porsche windscreen wipers fitted tomorrow. I only fitted some Bosch Aero ones from Halfords a few weeks ago (after great reports on forums and top in Auto Express) but they are terrible for smears and noise.

Thats saved me some money and a visit then...[:D] Although the OPC wanted £52 ... I think I can fit them myself [:)] garyw
