Windscreen Washers

Hi All

It's that dreaded time of the year for the MOT and low and behold the Washers have decided to give up on my 86 924S.

Now I have started at the usual things - yes it has water in the resevoir, the fuse is in tact and all pipes are correctly connected.

THe car has, in the recent past had a new level on the steering column so I assume that this is OK. Also regarding this, if you pull the stalk towards yourself for long enough and hard enoungh the wipers will activate and do a double sweep of the screen. They wont however do it every time.

Can anyone offer some suggestions as to where I should go from here in trying to resolve this simple but, unfortunately MOT failing, problem.

It's probably just poor contacts on the switch / column.

Remove the steering wheel, top & bottom covers & switchgear is held in place by four long screws. (disconnect the battery first if you like, std advice but I never do). A little cleaning & tweaking of the contacts is all it might need. If the battery is still connected you can pull the lever & seee if water comes out.

also, have a quick look at the filter, at the end of the pipe, well its the begining really, it a little platic filter which stops all the crap bening sucked up from the resevoir if this gets blocked as mine did then it wont work, but it will still make the noise.

Looks like it's catching - my washers have also decided to stop working - the wipers sweep, but no squirt...

By the looks of the fuse chart both the wipers and screen pump use the same fuse (fuse 11), so it looks like maybe the pump itself has packed up.

Of no help to anyone, I know, but it feels good to report that I have something that works after the sunroof 'troubles' of recent times.

Pae - that's the joys of 924 ownership when those little electrical things actually work []...

Paul, sounds like you have the same problem as me - the wipers sweep but the washers don't squirt - I was hoping to try everything else before having to replace the pup. Does anyone have an idea as to how much a new pump is likely to be?

Plan to have a play about at the weekend so will come back and update on any progress or lack thereof..

a pump should cost around £45 from an independent. replacing mine didn't sort the problem though. The pump whirrs, but no juice on screen! The filter... yes, it clogs. Unclogging it doesn't seem to help me much though; maybe I should empty the tank and start again.

Having said all that though, I never really miss my jets - about 18 months ago I coated all the glass on my 924 with a water repellant called Ombrello. Details are at www.weathertec.co.uk for anyone who's interested. All of a sudden I had the best-working windscreen wipers in the world! As well as repelling water it repels dirt, I can't actually remember the last time I had to use any screenwash. Darned good stuff.

Thanks for all of your pointers - the problem turned out to be the contact points on the wiper/washer stalk on the steering column. It is an almost new stalk and the breaker points were too far apart... a little bit of persuasion and all is well to attempt the MOT!!

The lack of squirt could be due to the non-return valves perishing and sticking shut. I took mine out and the washers work fine. They're located near the nozzles under the bonnet.
