I'm in need of help!

Driving my car down to sunny Canterbury today I noticed the car cutting out momentarily when I hit a bump in the road.

Anyone got any idea what this could be. Thought I'd ask you guys first just in case it was a common problem. Not sure if I will make it home tonight.

Could be my Foo Foo Valve I guess.

Start with the simple things below. At least if you find the fault you'll get home and would have saved yourself a trip to a mechanic for diagnosis.

As a very initial first point of action I'd suggest checking that all fuses and relays are tight in their holders (not sure on your car but their may be one for power to the engine ignition side).

Then I suppose the culprit may be a loose connection somewhere in the ignition side of the engine - coil connections, etc - don't touch these with the engine running or you'll get zapped.

Try checking the DME box connections and DME relay fit - I guess yours is a box under the drivers seat - my old porker doesn't have one so can't suggest much more than check everything is plugged in tightly.

It sounds like something has probably worked slightly loose and is disconnecting then reconnecting almost instantly when driving over bumps.

At a push it could even be your ignition-key barrel. I once had an old vw that cut out over bumps - it turned out I could recreate the symptoms by wiggling the ingnition key (although I can't imagine the barrel would be worn on such a relatively young car such as yours but is worth ruling out).

Have you done up the battery leads ? bearing in mind the things on trickle charge 24 7 !!

DME is always a suspect on 964s. I used to carry a spare one just in case. Then my mate nicked it for his misbehaving 993.

Same thing happened to me, turned the cut out switch on and off and everything now fine

Lee your car has the cut-off switch wired through to the dash from the front mount in the bonnet, make sure it is all tight and working. These cars NEVER GO WRONG![:-]

I bashed and wiggled just about everything and I got home without a problem....

However the reason I made the trip in the first place was to get an MOT. It expires tomorrow.............IT FAILED []

My side repeaters dont work...Pulled them out only to discover that the wires have never been connected. How did it pass on the last three occasions?...Answers on a postcard..

Does anyone know where these wires are connected...is it behind the wheel arch plastic splash guard? All I have is a long wire with two long slim metal connectors on the end.

Lee, we can just wire them to the front indicators for the MOT with a length of wire then disconect till you find out where they should go for real.

No the front end was intact after the biggie that Herman the German had in it !! it's the rear end that was welded on a couple of years ago !!

Lee, I was seriously very sad to hear the problem of your side indicators failing the MOT, in fact it rather spoilt my night, thinking of how you were going to sort out this tragic situation all on your own and being stranded in Canterbury, look what happened to
St. Thomas A'Beckett and all that...........then I thought as the proprietor of the largest independent new and used motor car dealership in the UK, including ALL the main top marque franchises, realised that there may well be a top mechanic within your Empire who could wire up your bulbs........genuinely hope that it is now sorted and you got home ok....[]

I think you're absolutely right.

The problem is unless its something they work on everyday they're likely to stip the car right down to it's underpants to find the problem. ...I merely thought that if I could identify where the faultly wire leads too then I could point them in the right direction.

Ah, but if they missed they didn't work for a number of years already if you remove them completely, then, should they actually notice, "they are all like that guv special exemption from the factory should be listed in the testers handbook" should cover it .
Also polish the stainless exhaust that seems to distract the MOT man from at least half the checks he should be doing.

To try to help with your answer Lee, YES from vague memory the cables are behind the splash guard (this is Vague memory though, and it's a bit late to be lookin). What puzzles me is why they were disconnected in the first place! Your cutting out problem could be a number of things but do check around the battery and cut off for loose wires as this is a common cause of failure. How did you find that the lights were disconnected, if that does'nt sound like a silly question(can't picture a reason for pulling the wiring out in the first place)

They were found to be inop at the point of MOT. When we popped the repeater out with the wire we found two dangly conectors on the end.

Over the weekend I have taken all the plastic wheel arch liners out. ( I nearly started polishing under there but stopped myself ) and reckon the wire takes a route through the rear of the wing into where the hinges are then into the A pillar and then through into the bonnet compartment and now I'm looking for the point on contact.

As to why they are disconnected I have no idea. There is certainly no evidence of any tampering under the arches and it looks like nothing has ever been apart, just like it was straight from the factory.

Would be interested to know if you guys could confirm this wire going through the A post. Easiest to see when viewed with door open looking through gap between outer door and front wing.
