Why You Should Replace Your Head Gasket

Looks simple enough that. I reckon I could get the bits from PIRTEK with a bit of work discount [;)] Think one of them might be going on mine.
 
Is there not an element of risk in having a strong "weak" link like the cometic gasket?
What will be the next link in the chain that would give if the gasket holds in adverse conditions? And will it be rather more expensive and difficult to fix?
944 aren't particularly prone to chg failure - Stuart's (nearly) functioning gasket looking like it did is testament to that. Others have shown simialrly moth eaten gaskets removed for prudence but still functioning fine.
It might stop the chg failure but is there a cost?

Rob - am assuming you got yours up and running again ok? I don't think I read that bit, maybe I missed it.

Your probably still ok with the cometic HG even if it is a lot stronger as the studs will still stretch under extreme pressure and thus lift the head, however it is advisable to keep the car tuned correctly and an AFR is a must (I am talking modified cars here). Where it gets more critical is when you change the studs and HG, then the car needs to be set up by someone who knows exactly what they are doing and must be a custom map, no off the shelf chips for this situation as that would lead to disaster.

The standard gaskets seem to be good for about 340 to 350 bhp from general consensus so will stick with one of those. Got the sump off and the rods out of the car. The big ends have very little wear apart from a couple of areas of light fretting which will need a small dress. Measured the first top ring end gap and it came out as 1.13mm so shagged! Service limit is 0.80mm, new size is between 0.2 and 0.4mm. New rings arrived today thankfully. The compression pressures were 105 to 110 PSI so shows you even with shagged rings they still go! Something else for all you turbo owners out there to address as they will all be the same!!!
