Why follow Porsche’s limited revs running in procedure

With most other manufacturers generally requiring a yearly/10k mile service interval while Porsche recommend double that for their performance cars you do have to wonder if the former really is necessary and that it's designed primarily to keep dealers happy and in work. Of course it may just be that Porsche have more confidence in their manufacturing and assembly methods, but the recommendation will have been backed up both by experience and extensive testing in the same way as that for running-in.

Running-in and servicing intervals? - owners' personal preferences and opinions will always vary.

I have another VAG vehicle with 20k miles servicing, but have changed the oil at 10k and followed up with a full service at the prescribed time on the basis oil is cheap compared to engine wear.

I've had my 981 CS a year and, for some obvious and less obvious reasons I've only done 5k. Despite that, I'm keen to change the oil like my daily. Is it just a case of draining the oil and refilling. Or is it more involved because of the dry sump?

Nope. Just remove the drain-plug to drain the oil. Although they're described as having integrated dry-sump lubrication with on-demand electronically controlled oil pump, unlike the previous generation air-cooled engines the water-cooled engines aren't actually dry-sump, although oil is scavenged from the cam boxes.

Agreed Andrew, and I certainly place a lot of trust in what I'm told by Porsche. One does wonder, though, if higher mileage between changes is a "target"; one more positive aspect. My point really is: more regular changes cannot possibly do any harm and can only be good - surely? (.... and, especially if there have been track days, it makes one feel better not worrying about the two years since the last change!)

For me .. I`d only change more frequently `if` I was going to be over the 20,000 mile interval. My previous 981 CS did 15k between year 4 and 6, which reminds me I still have the old oil and air filters to `tear down` and `inspect` !

I adopt an `arrive and drive` policy - pay up for extended warranty, use it more than wash it and adhere to service schedule
