Whoops Think I have Just Blown Up My Gearbox

OK I stripped down the driveshafts tonight and as far as the shafts are concerned it is all good. The splines on the shafts and the joints are in excellent condition. I was not so happy with the state of the races in the CV joints. There were some very bad spots of damage and all of it very locallised. Needless to say they will be getting replaced however I don't think by a long stretch it is the cause of my troubles. I have attached some pictures of the worst offenders. The quality isn';t the best because I uploaded them from my Blackberry. Let me know your thoughts all you CV joint experts. I am no CV joint expert although I have changed a few in my time I have never actually varried out a post mortem. Not that I think they are dead just in need of replacing while I am at it. Sorry it';s a bit pic heavy.

As you say, definitely in need of replacement, and possibly due to fail quite soon, but I am struggling to see a catastrophic loss of drive in those pictures at the stage they are now.

In the short term you could put them back together and switch the side that they were fitted to , this would put the torsional load onto the good unworn portion of the joint that the ball race runs on or maybe if its not your daily runner and time is not of the essence it would be better to replace them .[:)]

Well mate the next step is to remove the clutch and if the clutch is at fault then thinking about it I may well have to put them back in!! Can't afford a clutch and CV joints at the minute [:(] On the plus side my driveshafts are now spanking clean and have a few new coats of patent Edd China Satin Black [:D] and are now looking like new. All the empty spaces that are developing under my car will get a good undercoat treatment and the torque tube housing will get a good clean and some Edd China paint. I already have plans for the gearbox if I do refit it. A repaint as it came out the factory in silver with the center section in black. The underside of my car will look as good as the outside. Even if I do have to sit in it on the drive making car noises [:D]

I have a Sachs turbo clutch kit here Rob if yours is knackered (where my money is, sounds like the centre has started to fail and the debris that is catching is giving you the drive!) My 2 pences worth,
Alasdair

nothing wrong with using a used clutch . [;)] I expect a good used clutch with new thrust bearing could outlast the car. it should last 30-50k+ miles and give you some time to spread the costs over a year or so

Nick I was talking about reusing the CV joints. If it is the clutch then I would rather put a new one in. For the amount of work involved in it I would rather never have to do it again [:)] I will start the teardown for the clutch tomorrow and keep everyopne posted. On the plus side again I refurbed the transaxle cross member today and it looking good as new. The transaxle mount was in surprisingly good nick. The rubber was absolutely rock solid only surface rust on the metal. That had a good clean up and paint and will be getting reused. Alasdair I will PM you about the clutch when I get dug a bit further into it. In the meantime like I said text me your number as I have a new one and lost loads of my numbers.

Simon do you know what I was thinking the same today. I try to always look on the bright side [:)] She will be a better turbo when I am finished with her. Don't worry there will be plenty of pics.

? I thought you said you couldn't afford to replace the clutch as well as all the other stuff. I got 75000 miles out of a used clutch on my Lux but whilst its stripped it would be best to put a new clutch in for sure. i hope its not your daily driver ?

No not my daily mate.  I use a 1 litre Yaris for my daily hack.  Why not it's cheap as chips [:)]

Can't believe you haven't finished it yet [:D]

I can vouch for Rob that the Yaris is a cracking little car, quick, comfy and like a Gaddis inside!

Fair play to you Rob , there is no substitution for hard work , you'll definately get there in the end , glad you're not in a rush .That type of restoration can even be quite pleasurable once you have had that initial dose or gearoil run down into the armpit and feel " ah well thats it can't get any dirtier now ".
I will be eating my own words in a few minutes[] , have to go out and start replacing the long handbrake cable on my S2.
Well priced at 43 euro from opc , one motor factor quoted over 100 for same cable and probably not genuine.
Now where did I leave my axle stands ?[sm=spanner5.gif]

Well after four evenings on my back I finally managed to get the clutch out. It fought me right to the bitter end though and I had to drill some of the clutch plate bolts but it came eventually!!!! So has there been a sweep stake going on this one then or what? Well the money goes to Alasdair. As I rmoved the clutch bits started falling out of it so not a good sign from the off. You can see from the pics the pieces that are now surplus to requirements. If you look carefully you can also see that some of the springs have failed too. There is a fair bit of play on the centre housing of the friction plate as well. Alasdair I will be in touch tomorrow lol.
