Who has the earliest Registered 944 S2

Paul is right the very last S2's were made in Zuffenhausen but I think that the number was small and only in 1992?

Our cars were never galvanised. They were hot zinc dipped.Once the zinc dipping is chipped or scrapped off they rust at an accelerated rate. Also not sure about this late verses early argument re steel quality etc.Mine was build in Oct 88 and it was rusted to bits.I think it's got alot more to do with care and conditions that the car is used and stored in.My car spent alot of it's life living next to the sea on both the west and east coast. It was serviced by the dealer until it was 10 yrs old and then by a good indie in Scotland. But it still rusted to hell and it had been repaired along the sills etc at least twice before I bought it.
As always there is no hard and fast rule about cars.IF I had know as much about these cars when I bought it I may have stuck to my 924.It was 9 years older and had never been welded and was not going to need any for the forseeable future.I could have built a 944 turbo powered gt replica by now and saved a load of cash along the way.But hey that's why we love our cars.

My '83 2.5 was a lot better than my '89 2.7 except for a section or the floor near the handbrake, which I needed to get welded just after I got it. The repairer was pretty sure the sill had been replaced and the floor straighten there many years ago and the damage to the galv. was why I needed the work doing.

ORIGINAL: Suffolk944

Late 944's were indeed made in Zuffenhausen and from 1990 iirc - mine was.

Is the 11th character of your chassis number a Z or an N ?

Mines a 1990 and the letter is a Z.

ORIGINAL: colin944

Mine is 07/02 /1989 zermat silver with extended blue pine stripe and sports seats. Although as I pulled it to bits all the build dates were oct 88.

Our S2's are twins! Also 7/2/89

Would be interesting to compare chassis nos mine is WPOZZZ94ZKN401838.Not sure what it all means but I'm sure some one will tell me.Also to reiterate 944's are not galvanised. They are biult using normal steel and then dipped in hot zinc after the shell is complete.Galvanised cars arte built using gavanised steel.

Colin, I think you are using a very narrow technical definition of galvanising, i.e. electro-galvanising. Are you aware of any actual production cars that are made out of electro-galvanised sheet stock as opposed to hot-dipped? I'm not.

For many decades the entire metals processing industry has generally referred to hot-dip coating and spray coating as forms of galvanising, and while Monsieur Sorel's original 1873 patent is only about electro-galvanising, many subsequent patents have been granted for alternative methods of establishing a sacrificial zinc anode layer on to steel.

There was a very good series of articles about this very topic in Porsche Post last year. Over a number of months it covered every aspect of Porsche paintshop and metallurgy technology through the years from 356 to modern day.
