As per the title, a lot seem to sell up and then buy something else, then buy another 944.

A few on Scoobynet have had or had one and either come back or regret it.

My wife was talking to her friend, her husband had one when they met and it wad her favourite, he still misses it despite having some serious exotics, though perhaps a day in mine might cure the nostalgia !

Anyone you know bought one and hated it ?

Different years but same story for me ,I went away tried other stuff but bought mine back aswell,at one point It went up to 3 944s but am down to 2 now, (and a 968)[:D]

Funny , was just viewing an old clip of Tiff Nidell on youtube saying how much he misses his old 944 turbo and how he'd like one again !

ive had 5 944 turbos + 1 944 lux, then i went to 964 carrera 2 then a 993 carrera 2,

I had a 944 turbo (220bhp) in 1992, sold it as I was getting grieve from the wife for been selfish having too many toys !!
I bought my current 944S last year as a third car/ project, funny thing is that I now have more toys than in 1992 !!

Had a period away from them, sold my Turbo S in 04 then bought it Back 07 and then a year later my 220 Turbo, regretted selling the Turbo S as it pulled off the drive, i cannot see me parting with it in the near future.

I owned varous models up until 2001 when I sold up. I bought an old cheap car for the 2007 Scumball3000 charity rally and the bug bit again. Im very much at the opposite end of the spectrum now, having owned an M758 and a CS before; now my car is a little more low-end.

I did the Scumball with Simon, and that is when I got a taste for it buying my 944s, had to sell it, but got my current one two years ago now. I fancy a cab now like yours so I am thinking of selling mine again, which seems silly having just had it restored to its former glory. cant make my mind up..

in 2005 i bought a red 944 lux off ebay which was a right shed, spent the following year doing it up, and loved it to bits, despite all the grief it gave me. you get this real sense of achievement in restoring a beaten up car to its former glory, fixing things so they work again, and even small things like getting the electric windows working again felt like a real achievement!

child #1 appeared around that time, and the rear-facing child seat fitted fine in the front of the 944. however, by that stage, i was getting interested in 928s, and went for a 1990 928 s4. the thing was a bit bananas, but after 6 months of owning it, i went from 0 points on my licence to having 6, and had to give a further 3 to the missus (which she still reminds me of to this day...). oddly, the child seat didn't fit in the 928, plus it was coming up to needing a service and i had this sneaking feeling it'd be in the thousands...so i got rid, and went back to vw golfs.

that was 4 years ago. now the children are older, and this nov i got rid of my golf v5 and bought a silver 944 lux. loving it!

Hi Duncs, what kind of real-world MPG did you get out of the 928 please? I am seeing a few well-priced S4s around and they look sooo tempting!

Hi Mark,
I've just bought a 968 cab which is in top nick, but so far not so sure when comparing it to my S2 cab which is not a great example but very good mechanically! The 2 issues are the 6 speed box - prefer the 5 of the S2 and the handling on 17" wheels/wider tyres? Does your 968 have 16" or 17" wheels? If 16" how do you rate handling compared to the 944?
I'm find the steering heavier and it wanders on "B" bumpy roads with a tenancy to pull to the left, it's fine on smooth "A" roads the plus point is that it corners as if on rails! I was selling my S2 but will wait now until I've tried 16" wheels with standard size tyres?
Maybe 944's just get under your skin so to speak & once smitten that's it?

I've now owned nearly 40 cars and driven many more but I can honestly say that Porsche remains my favourite brand I have been pleasantly surprised by every Porsche model I've ever experienced. Even my 5 minute spin in a 3.2 Boxster S (a car I was really expecting could not impress me) was such a pleasant surprise after driving it's rivals such as the torque less RX8 and unstable S2000, which felt like two cars bolted together.

However the ratty as hell 944 lux I owned at 18 sealed the bond for me and the 944. Every time I drive one; the beautifully weighted pendulum gear change, the weighty and communicative steering, the warm comfort of the interior, the 944 smell and solid feel you get back from every control. I just cant help but fall in love every time I drive one.

I just wish I could just own and enjoy one but every time I buy one I get overwhelmed by the temptation to have 'that little bit more power' until it turns into a project car, spends months at a time off the road annoying me and eventually I end up selling it for something else. ..then I start thinking about the dream of a good 944 again and the cycle continues.

I need a tidy, rust free 300ish hp 944 turbo; black with sports leather and LSD. No play in any of the controls... perfect! Practical, mile munching, torque out of the bends, pleasure on every b-road and perfect for the odd track day.

Ben, your your old turbo is now not far from that. Just needs a re-map a lick of paint and LSD.

Interesting thread. Are there any MX5 past and present owners here. A Mk1 MX5 was my car before the 944 S2. Interested to hear from people able to compare the two.
I've not driven my 944 much - enjoy what I have done but definitely feel the extra mass. Greater 944 appreciation will follow I'm sure after I've tracked it.

944 man - how would you compare ride and handling of the two? Nothing too deep, just a few basic observations would be interesting to read.

Had my first '86 220 951 in 1991, my brother took it to Oz and I put the proceeds into a house and enjoyed a company 318i......[:(]

then in late 2001 I spotted a black 250 on the local garage forecourt, and did a deal. I have not been without one since.

What would I replace it with....? It seems everything now is complicated, heavy, expensive, fragile, NVH detached, soulless, blinged up, boring, cup holder infested junk....give me 4 Cylinders, Boost, Traction, LSD, Balance and durability in a neat package including 4 seats and a hatch.
