Whirring - cv boot?

On a recent longish drive (Edinburgh and back to Leicester) I noticed a whirring/droning noise that seemed to come from the n/s rear area. I have just had a look and have found that the outer near side drive shaft CV joint boot is split. Has anyone repaced their own cv joint or boot? How difficult was it? (I have replaced cvs on my 924s and my 944s2).
