Which short shift kit?

I have a JMG short shift kit fitted. I don’t recall which one but it wasn’t the shortest throw they had available. Probably the one which had a 25% reduction?

I didn’t choose their shortest throw option at the time I was worried at the time that it will be a pain to use daily as it may be more clunky for city driving or the school run etc.

So, getting to the point, what’s the best short shift kit available which significantly reduces the throw and not too clunky if used as a daily driver?

FYI, there isn’t any L&R wobble as that was fixed. I just fancy a shorter throw.

I bought the Only944 kit, a LOT cheaper than the rip-off item from JMG, if I were you I would avoid them completely, they have a bit of a "reputation".

It feels awesome and is very precise and short-throw, there is also a mod you can do with the shift lever, search for the buchanan shift mod on here or look in my engine build thread. You basically add the 968 plastic bushes to the shift lever which removes all the slop.

What I've found with short shift kits is reducing the throw makes the shift action stiffer. And trying to change up into second gear from first, and down into second from third gear quickly, can defeat the synchro's. And it's not hard to select the wrong gear when rushing it too. Re the JMG thing, I think Jon stepped back from the day to day running for health reasons, and reportedly things then went pear shaped. I don't know if he ever went back, but in the earlier years of my turbo ownership, he gave me plenty of good free advice.

Echo Blade's comments somewhat, I inherited a billet rear short shift linkage with a 2nd hand gearbox, possibly an Only944 or a 9Republik one, no other mods. The shift is shorter but not particularly short. I have renewed the front linkage and bushings with stock parts, so I find it quite precise overall. It is notchy from 1st to 2nd (3rd to 2nd is fine however) when the box is cold. Reverse can also be a tad fiddly to engage when cold (not notchy but can take 2 or 3 attempts to engage). It's fine when the oil heats up a bit. It's fine when you are used to it but it's a bit of a pest on a cold frosty Scottish morning for a mile or so till it defrosts! Gearbox oil is quite new and fully synthetic, but got 3 litres of new stuff sitting there for another change at some point when the car is out the bodyshop and will see how that goes.

I daily drove my 944 Turbo for 7 years with the standard linkages front and rear (I also had the rear linkage replaced with a new Porsche one $$$).

1st to 2nd was always notchy with the occasional crunch when trying to change quickly.
Reverse was always temperamental - having to operate the clutch twice in order to engage usually.

I think this is just a common issue with our gearboxes and possibly not related to the linkage itself.

On oil, last change I used Mobil 1 synthetic which seems to have made the change lovely, was recommended by a couple of the gearbox rebuilders on rennlist.
