Which coolant to use

The coolant level in my car (6mths old) is below min, even though there is not warning light on the dash.

1. Do I trust the lack of warning light, and wait?
2. Does anyone know which brands of coolant are OK to use...I have bought GlycoShell...Merc, BMW approved but not Porsche
3. It says "not to mix with silicate free coolants": what the hell they are they , and would the stuff in the 911 when I bought it be silicate free, or not!?
4. It also says to drain and flush the whole system..is this really needed, can't I just top it up

Thanks!

I'm assuming you've checked for potential leak - blue crystalised droplets of water being a tell tale sign?

Take it back to the OPC. I wouldn't top-up myself, I think the brochure claims that the coolant is designed to last for the life of the engine, so presumably there's a potential problem if it's using coolant. Let the dealership sort it out for you.

You should not trust the lack of a warning light and definately not be driving around with the coolant at this level, see what the manual has to say about it !

Only use the OPC supplied coolant ( they should give you a 1 litre top up bottle FOC ).

You will find that the coolant is actually pink, I have had the same problem on mine which turned out to be a faulty water pump/housing etc which was replaced on warranty.

You must sort this now, if Porsche get wind that you are knowingly running the car with insufficient coolant in it .........

Yves

Thanks guys. Wise advice. Will call the OPC and have it looked at...

... the level is a bit below min., but does seem to be constant...perhaps it was just not filled up to the right level in the first place.

I,m going to the West London OPC open night on Wed 24-1, so may bring it up then. Are you going to this evening Rob?
