WHERE'S MY CAR GONE?

Am I correct in thinking there is a big difference in disc width between 220 and 250 versions and also the 250 have angled vents and are 'handed'. I remember a discussion from way back in the day A Husbourne Crawley trip / drive I think - Anyway someone behind me in a 220 car said I stopped quickly and they had to work to stop in time - It stuck in my mind because I wasn't even braking that hard!

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't braking performance requirements more related to the weight of the car and stickiness of the rubber than bhp? Brake cooling, yes I might agree (and bigger brakes = greater cooling, again I might agree), but bhp = a need for bigger brakes? No.
Great to see your car receiving this attention Peter - I look forward to catching up with you in it in better days! Do you still have the model you made of it to match?

Hope you are well sir....yes I'd agree re brakes vs bhp with a couple of 'points to order' as those in the house might say.
When accelerating hard and suddenly needing to brake, it does take more braking force to overcome that initial inertia. When cruising, then no, no difference at all. The other point is more BHP, generally means a higher speed and thus bigger brakes may be preferred. For general driving though it makes no difference at all, so yes I agree with your statement.
Re the model, I still have it, still unfinnished, in fact it's now hiding in a cupboard awaiting some TLC, the grandchildren thought they would play with it....nothing a little glue can't fix.....:)

Sorry, I missed your post...yes sir, that was I..back in the good old 'Titanic' days..there is a difference in braking distance between the early and late cars. I can't recall the difference now, it's in the road tests ...that was a fun day, I was behind you when we were enjoying some spirited driving...IIRC you had to suddenly brake for oncoming traffic...I have an image of a coach or something in the way...I braked later which didn't help, still we all managed to avoid each other....:)

I wish we still had those early days, often out in the cars, great venues and great company. Such a shame we don't have Martyn and Nick anymore. Both great organisers for the 944 register, even more so when camping out...my kids loved Nick....helping him find wood for the fire....great days which I miss...

Similar good memories here Peter, although heading for a dyno day just after I bought my turbo, thinking "at last, I'll be able to keep up!" (Although my old lux held its own remarkably well in hindsight), but still I struggled. The "rollers of truth" explained why - with a stock turbo I was still the only one in the group with less than 300bhp!
Another relevant to the braking conversation, I took the turbo on its one and only trackday around Silverstone. I had some time with one of their instructors. He suggested I should not do more than three laps at a time and come in to cool them off. I asked what was wrong with them? "Oh nothing, they're really pretty good. You are just using them way too much."
 
Fond memories Tref, I loved the dyno days, Rick collecting the results to publish on his 944 UK League, it's still live online. I saw him not too long ago...perhaps a year, it was at a Porsche meet at the ACE cafe....
The PCGB national event was always fun, my wife and kids would attend those camping events. IIRC, John still blames me for him buying 'beaky' as his lux couldn't keep up on the way to one of the nationals so a turbo had to be sought...:)
Can't have memories without recalling Le Mans...first trip, I was a passenger in Tony's car...I attended a further 4 times, next was following Paul with Tony as his passenger, my friend Rob tried to keep up in his 993. I went twice more with my neighbour and the last time was with my wife.
All fantastic memories and some extreme speeds...:)
The car performed superbly each time, never missed a beat... great days...:)

Oh yes the rollers of truth.... cue my first trip to this event where I ended up returning home on a transporter (via Promax) due to a coolant leak [:D]
 
Thank you...those were great days....not just the dyno days but the events and even the short breaks awsy, I have fond memories of the drives around the lake district....:)
 
I have a video of me taking a mate round Blyton Park and you can hear me saying "right, we’ll make this a cool down lap as the brakes are starting to feel a little spongy” for him to reply "good, my stomach’s feeling a little spongy too” [:D]
 
I remember a few laps in Andrew's 422bhp monster, I was sure that we couldn't possibly make it through some of the bends that we were negociating at such a high speed at Castle Coombe...the car handled it with no drama, totally blizting the 911's on the track..:)
