Hi Tony Tried 6J x 15 inch rims with 205 tyres on the 2.7, did not like it at all. But I think the issue was more the small diameter rather than the width.

Hi
Need advise

I've been offered a set of D90's off a 964 as potential track wheels.

Front: 205/55/R16" 6J/52

Rear 225/50 R16" 8J/52

Anyone know if they will fit straight on to my S2, or will the fronts need spacers, Has anyone tried 6" on the fronts instead of the normal 7"

Hmmm - I'd say the 6" are too narrow. 205/55/16 are standard size for the front of an S2 on a 7" wheel. Narrower wheel with that tire would require less tire pressure to keep the tread flat and then you'd have more give in the sidewalls. Remember that Porsche doesn't recommend more than 17" wheels on 944s and even then, some suspension changes are recommended (camber adjusters on the front - don't remember what changes on the rear). Oops - found this Here's the official Porsche statement on 17" wheels on 944/951s (ignore spacer info): ---------------------------- ARTICLE BEGINNING TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN : 17 INCH APPROVED WHEELS & TIRES Model(s): 1987-On Porsche 944 (with M30 option) 1987-On Porsche 944S (with M30 option) 1987-On Porsche 944 T (with M30 option) 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo 1989-On Porsche 944 S2 Group: 4 Bulletin No.: 9303 Date: September 28, 1993 SERVICE INFORMATION Concern: Installing 17" Porsche wheels on vehicles previously equipped with 16" wheels. SERVICE PROCEDURE Installation Information 1. Front and rear fender well lips must be reworked and/or checked for adequate tire clearance. See Fig. 1. 2. Suspension travel must also be checked. Parts such as brake lines, hoses and brackets must have adequate clearance. 3. New caster eccentrics, rear mounts and nuts must be installed in the front control arms. This change is necessary due to a change in caster specification on vehicles equipped with Porsche 17" wheels. The specification for vehicles equipped with 17" wheels is 3'-15'-45. See Fig. 2. 4. Vehicles must have a rear stabilizer bar. 5. When adjusting vehicles to new caster specification, all alignment values should be checked at that time. 6. When summer tires are used on vehicles with 17" Porsche wheels, snow chains cannot be used. If winter tires are used, only snow chains with Porsche Part Number 911 361 924 00 may be used. 7. Tire pressures for front and rear 17" Porsche wheels is to be set at 2.5 bar (36 PSI) at approximately 20'C (68'F). 8. When using this rim and tire combination, a 17mm spacer plate must be installed on the rear wheel hub. The customer must be informed that if the emergency wheel is needed, the spacer must be removed. 9. Not for Cabriolet vehicles. Presumably you already have the car's original set of 7" and 8" S2 D90 wheels? For the track I would be inclined to put a set of 8" on both ends of the car. A set made up of the remaining 6" and 7" D90s would be a decent basis for snow tyres.

+ 1 for lowtimers suggestion, use 4 x 8" D90's all round with matched tyres and you should have a well balanced and good handling car. I run the Turbo on a combination of 2 x 8" D90's at the back with either the same at the front or 2 x 7.5" CS wheels at the front (better offset for cooling etc) and the car handles very well - Ran the later set up at the Ring last week = great handling and tyres only went off in the late afternoon, principally cos I hadn't dropped the pressure enough on the front left.....

Thanks for the advise, I'll double up on the 8" on my next trackday.
