Hello All

Can anyone help in what size/type/etc of wheeling bearing I need for my 1968 912!

They have been groaning for some time now and I need to get them replaced.

Many Thanks in advance.

Dan

I did my front ones I stripped them out and just went to a bearing place (industrical) and they sorted me out a set. I think they were about £6 each side inc seal, but I got them free as I did used to buy about £2000+ bearings a month from them... te he . old saying who you know...

Front or back? I replaced a rear bearing last year, its a fairly major job.. can post details if you want.

It is the rear bearings but just the outer ones on the wheel hub itself. I don't think the inner ones need replacing.

Any info would be appreciated though.

I just replaced the rear ones on my 76 E and they were abit of a pain as I had to go to my mates garage and borrow a few tools to do it. It all worked out ok in the end but i replaced the one bearing but it was two in one any way. later car. Do them all then you only have to do it once. And Bearing noise ....as an Ex bearing man in my fitting days which one do you THINK the noise is coming from ?????? cos they can fool you very easy change them all...

Cos the ones you will fit will be new and sound ok but the ones you left sound ok but are 30 years old....[8|]

Done job.

Mark

It sounds like it is the right rear wheel making the noise. I was going to do both the outer rear bearings and leave the inner ones which should be OK and is a bigger job I believe.

Dan - on my '69 there is just one bearing for each rear wheel (with two races within it). I was pretty surprised at this, but I think its the standard set-up for all the earlier cars except the 930.

The difficulties I found with doing the rear bearing were: firstly getting the stub axel out of the old bearing, and secondly getting the old bearing out of the suspension arm. Both are a very tight interference fit. In the end, I bought a large slide hammer (hub puller) for removing the hub/stub axel, and then made a big cup-shaped bearing puller out of a large tube of steel.
