What tyres are you using ?

Hope to get some advise here based on experience.
I need to invest in a new set of tyres for next seasons hillclimbs.

Toyo R888's or Avon slicks ?

Any advise or any alternatives based on experience from you guy's out there

R888's for me, the're very predictable even beyond the limit. and reasonably hard wearing.

put them on for the first race at Brands Hatch did 30 min qualifying, 40 minutes race. The same at Donnington, Oulton, Silverstone. Then did 2 one hour sessions at Spa (1 in the wet).

Still got enough tread to start next season on them, maybe 2 races.


 
Can your car really run slicks? Id go for 888s because I doubt that youll get an increase in performance sufficient to make up for being moved up a class.

In order to runs slicks you need a lot of chassis work (suspension and shell), or you cant deal with the increased grip available and youll end up with a jelly monocoque after a while too, then youll need a new bodyshell...
 
Anyone tried Yoko 048's ?

Shell and suspension are well sorted including full Gaz coilovers

Already run in a class that puts me at the bottom so any advantage would be good
 
I ran Yoko's 32R & 48R on the Caterham both excellent tyres, but that's a very light car (520Kgs) and even then I could get through them pretty quick.

It may be that hill climbs and sprints are less demanding with only short runs so could be an option.

They definitely wouldn't be option I would consider.

The car is only used on hillclimb's so need max grip from the start as no time to warm tyres up.

Someone must have used slicks somewhere sometime.

Any suggestions on suspension set up. i.e camber caster etc

A friend of mine does a lot of hillclimbs in an evo rs. I believe he really liked the softer R888 a lot, I remember talking to him about them as he said the softer ones are difficult to get hold off.
 
Used slicks on trackdays for a while - when I could get them cheap - very good, grippier than treaded trackday rubber, still progressive break away - wore the wheel bearings and brakes faster, but I was going faster. I was on road biased suspension settings so still wore the outsides of the fronts.
Andrew S did a lot of track miles on slicks and as far as I know suffered no issues - car is still around.
If its the same class for treaded and slicks try the slicks.

Having said all that I have little experience of hill climbing ( 1 day prescott school) will the tread blocks moving around heat the tyre faster? what are the class leaders using?

my class puts me up against 911's short wheelbase Audi Quattro ans similar
Class leader are all on slicks
really unsure of the way forward and suspension settings
