What tyre size should I have?

I've thought since I bought this car that the tyres look a little slim. Today, I tried to price up a couple of replacement tyres, only to be told that the size was pretty unusual and that they would cost around £120 each!

Its currently fitted with 15x7 inch cookie cutters (I think that's what they're called?) and its fitted with 185/70/15 VR's all round. Is that right?

I've priced up both 205/65/15 and 195/65/15, both are around half the price. But, what size should a 1982 944 actually have fitted?
 
A 195 will certainly go on a 7" (or 178mm) rim , as will a 205. I have for example a Volvo T5 with 7" alloys with 215 tyres on. I dont fancy a tyre as high as 65 though very ug [:'(]

As they say " suggest you consult a tyre professional first " ( I.E don't sue me) [:D]
Shouldnt they be able to tell you.

185/70/15 was a very early fitment. Id suggest 215/60/15: this is the most common approved fitment. 195/65/15 was also approved but Id advise against using it.

Yeah, you're right. That's the closest to my existing front tyres. Being a bit of a tight arse at the moment, I only wanted to change the rear tyres for now, as the Pirelli's that are currently on the back are quite badly perished. I'm surprised they didn't pick it up when it was MOT'd.
