What oil should I buy ?

Im in favour of oil posts and i think that they are now far more fact filled, with a great deal less unsubstantiated opinion than they used to be.

*editied to add yes to new sump washer, my last one leaked but stopped after fitting the replacment, you'll need about 7 litres, if you buy 10 then you have enough for top ups over the year*

Edd

Disturbingly I read that as "you have enough for fry ups over the year". Must be tea time...

Having a bad day Oli?

No, not particularly thanks. However the whole oil thing annoys me quote a lot and discussions on the topic never get anywhere; they just end up with everyone spouting their opinion and there is no 'right' answer. It annoys me when someone who hasn't read such a discussion before comes on here and asks the question again, and the same old same old is trotted out again. Don't be lazy, don't expect others to re-type answers they may have written before and use the search system - to my mind that's just good manners. Craigybaby, in order to help you out here is a link to a search for the word "Oil" on these forums:

Oli, I was hoping to convey a certain amount of irony, mine lives outside and gets used when I want to use it, life is too short to worry about such things, mine has a little bit of rust coming through but I will deal with that come spring.
OK, fair cop. (I did think it was a slightly unusual comment to come from you!) Apologies for being short with you and keep using your 944 as it was intended!

In order not to confuse me with irony you may like to try using some smilies in the future - here are some to choose from!

Oli.

Oil, be as short as you like, I need reigning in a little sometimes, assume most of my posts are bollocks and you won't go far wrong ;)

Has anyone tried that mobil 10-60 extended life oil?

Fwiw I consider the 10W60 oils to be a bit thick for our cars. Firstly *W60 oils are not recommended by porsche for our cars, they do not appear in our manuals and they are not recommended by porsche at this time. My issue with them is there thickness, whilst one can make the assumption that thickest (for protection) is best, this is not always the case. A 10W60 oil is 70% thicker than a 10W40 oil at operating temps, being so thick I'm not convinced it has the ability to provide proper oil flow when needed. In addition the much thicker oil can sup power and bhp, cause more heat through increased friction and reduce mpg.

If your looking to use a thicker oil the (synthetic) 10W50 oils fall within porsches recommendations and should easily provide enough protection for even the hardest track day.

More info is found here.

My two penny worth................

Most modern oils are better than the oils available when the 944 was made so hand wringing about the best available is not necessary in my book. Regular changes are more important than long life oils. Halfrauds in particular are expensive for branded oils.

The 944 has a turbo which seems to suggest a very special oil is required yet most small cars and particularly diesels - (some very powerful) have turbo`s but the 944 has a water heat dissipation system that they dont so any modern oil within grade will cope fine. 10-40W is what I used in my old one and it used a little so I didnt go thinner.

If you look on the net you can buy oil at very reasonable prices. A lot of the manufacturers are going over to 4L containers as modern small engines only use about 4 litres but the prices seem to have remained at 5L prices!!

Costco do perfectly good oil (Chevron) at about £30 for a 20 litre drum.

I now buy my oil on the net for the Touareg as it requires a very specific type and (amazingly) also my batteries for it is cheaper and that includes postage!

GSF are good but your Vauxhall or Audi dealer is also competitive and they wont mess about selling you dodgy oil unfit for high power turbocharged cars. GSF oils are Fusch now rebranded and I`ve tracked many cars with it and changed it regularly. If you are worrying about oils then key is it staying within temperature (a most important gauge to install if you dont have one) and not switching off the engine with turbo still spooling.

Which is exactly why I buy the quantity I need from OPC.

Can't go wrong [;)]

I cant see why decent 10w40 wouldnt be more than adequate for road use.

I've been using mobil 1 10w60 in my 230k s2 engine for the past year. I thought it worth a go on such a high mileage engine.

jmg also recommend it for 944's I think. There's a table on their website somewhere - can't find it today. ..

The s2 uses a little on track, maybe half a litre or so in a day. On the road, idle pressures stay around 4 bar, which seems a bit high, dropping to 3 when really hot.

It's due a change, so I'm going to try that petronas 10w40 synth I bought for next to nothing last year. It might be a little thin for track use but it costs very little to find out. I will use it at bedford ( unless i do a day before that) and try to check levels after every session. My rule of thumb on oil is: At track temps - 4+bar at high revs, 1+bar at idle, use less than the high-low marks on a dipstick in a whole track day.

My experience has been the 8v motor has lower oil pressure at idle than the s2. Turbos also use more on track. Strangely, castrol edge 10w60 disappeared very quickly in my turbo. The best for oil pressure at high temps, and the one that showed low use, was millers cfs 10w60.

I concur.

Many years ago I tried 10w60 oil in my 968, for a year. Thought I'd try it and see what it was like. The oil pressure gauge was always displaying noticeably lower than with 5w40. I came to the conclusion that it was too thick. So I've purely used 5w40 for the last 6 years and I've always been happy with what the oil pressure gauge has displayed.

I may eventually switch to 10w40 or 10w50 as the engine gets more mileage on it.
