I've decided what to do!
had a long chat with Simon Peckham today, nice guy who obviously loves 944's I'm going with his recomendations all the way allthough my initial thoughts were slightly different
Ken, I was wondering where your enquiries would lead to. My own enquiries led to SPS some years ago, mainly for a BB turbo for my then daily driver 951. Simon had a Red car which I test drove, and ended up owning. It cost a few bob, but less than a used Golf TDI and I regard it a superior daily driver.
The car was definitely better engineered than a new 951 off the line in 1989. The engine (2.5L) to this day (20k miles and 2 dreadful winters later) uses no oil. I put a Fuchs/Silkolene Oil in it as advised by Simon, and change it every 6k miles.
Up to that point I had previously run a std 220 turbo, and a 250 with a ProMax L2 kit. I wanted the next development and did consider the big capacity option, but there were too many unanswered questions. At the time, my biggest concern was that I would end up with a 15mpg borderline-grenade engine which would be unsuitable for daily use.
Simon was really helpful and understood my concern, he agreed to a test drive of about 80 miles I think, and I checked the mpg over the test. It was better than my own car! (I thought with 55lb injectors it may not be quite as good.) I have since added a 3" exhaust.
The next development of my car will be engine management........I think a world leading solution is going to emerge in Gloucestershire......
