What is the Spyder RS?

A view, not perhaps "up there in the Hallowed halls" but perhaps best summarised as "intensity"


or as I would say, "as mad as a box of frogs"
 
To answer your thread ..... 987 Spyder X4 price wise ... same roof and 987 possible as much fun level but slower and more usable on UK roads
 
I hadn’t realised until recently that the RS hood was a similar arrangement to the first 987 version. All cars have got fat with emissions and safety kit but Porsche haven’t really lightweighted the RS, even leaving in the Spyder hood arms.

Still I suppose the 987 was comparatively expensive (at list) in the day.
 
My car was listed at 56K when new in Sept 2011 with all the right bits and a Boxster S at the time was possibly around mid 40 s K so a fair stretch for a car with a non electric roof no radio etc .They have not reached the original RRP yet its strange as numbers are limited to around 225 UK RHD .the latest 718 are all over list .

my 987 was big bucks new with leather dash ÂŁ2.5k option and PCCB's ÂŁ6+ so that's about 10k ontop of a normal one. not cheap cars in 2010.

this platform got very expensive fast though, my 718 GTS was ÂŁ95k and people still poo poo it not being a GT car or a 911.
 
After collection last Thursday, I took it to Goodwood for a track day. As long as one doesn’t exceed the running in parameters it is a good way to run in the engine with varying revs and throttle. It also helps get a feel for the suspension and braking. 500 miles now back home with another 450 to go to complete the break-in process. Static noise test was a surprisingly low 87dB, helped no doubt by 4k soft limiter so it should be OK at Thruxton’s 90dB static limit. I don’t plan going on as many track days as I used to and I bought this car to tour rather than track.

The ride is quite busy and rubbish on rubbish roads. It seems worse than my GT4, perhaps the Dunlops are worse than Cup2 but unlikely. The Boxster GTS had comfort tyre pressures around 30psi versus the 35psi higher speed pressures which made a real difference to ride comfort but I’m reluctant to go down that route without further experience and advice. Maybe a DSC controller will be required as a last resort. I’ll be going up to Centre Gravity first to have it set-up for fast road and that might have some minor effect on ride.

I opted for the Weissach Pack as otherwise there is a lot of black plastic and I went for a painted bonnet to avoid very dark exposed carbon. I’ve had full PPF and ceramic coating which makes cleaning so much easier. Also fitted bolster protectors and ordered a Nutcracker tool set in case there is a need to remove the centre lock wheels. I am not sure whether to keep the Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres it came on which are described by some as “lethal in the wet”. We’ll see…

I’m getting 21mpg on normal driving and around 10mpg on Miss Daisy track driving which is not dissimilar to the GT4, although I expect non-Miss Daisy would be lower. Driving to Goodwood along the ridiculously busy southern route with long queues, the car was quite relaxing but then satisfying, albeit loud when presented with an overtaking opportunity

I plan on driving over for the Techno-Classica Essen in April and guess I’ll need some ear defenders for that drive. Hopefully the Spring factory tour will be around the same time and can be combined.

Anyway it’s now in the garage until New Year when rain or shine I’ll finish the break-in mileage.

I agree the full PPF & Ceramic Coating making cleaning so easy compared to a naked car :ROFLMAO:

They are much worse, my 718 Spyder came on Dunlops the ride was shocking bad, I binned them straight away and put cup2 on it was like a limo driving home vs Dunlops.

I am still out on the use of a SRS myself. not great on track really due to the soft rates (As Porsche made it as a road car, then put track tyres on it and solid bushings !! ) , poor roof and speed limited up for those fast euro hoons ! , and really too fast on the road these days. I sold my 991.2 GT3 as it was too fast a road car, my 4RS is just a track car.
Seems an odd one to me. not a car I lust or would buy myself. A normal 718 Spyder is too good a car to ever think about spending twice the price for a worst use road car in fact if never seeing a track buy a Boxster GTS 4.0. I get the real GT products they just make outstanding track cars now days.
UK road cars need 350 bhp lighter weights and PS4S's. may be even a GR 86 at ÂŁ27k is more fun one might say. the MPG also on the GT engine vs the 4.0 normal engine is worlds apart. As stated 21mpg vs way over 30 mpg , I get 36 mpg on even short runs in the GTS.
Lets not even talk about service costs or TAX or insurance where now days any car over ÂŁ100k is VERY hard to get cover for, and ni on impossible to get gap for, plus trackers needed and GT OPC costs plus more maintanance needed anyway on that enigine.
Then the cabin noise as a road car is just stupid. I actually now don't drive the 4RS on the road totally pointless.

Adding a fast road geo on road cars also pointless I find ruined my 718 Spyder I thought but I did do track days in it, less tyre on the road, less braking, less steering feel, more tyre wear. One just has to admit these really are not UK road cars esp with centre locks and track tyres ! Screw any euro Alps trip with that combo.

At the end of the day one just has to have a nice daily, a fun road car (Slighty older cars imo pre tech and opf's) and a proper track car and choose which one to use fit for the job in hand, and the SRS sorry to say don't fit in any of those 3 remits for me.

These are only my very personal opinions on why I would not want one myself of course.
 
Insurance time.. I've been with Classic Line for 4 years and carried forward my GT4 road and track policy onto the SRS thru expiry at the end of January. I requested a renewal quote and it was ÂŁ1,756 for my normal 7,500 miles and ÂŁ1,290 for 5,000 miles. The GT4 last year was ÂŁ1,186 for 7,500 miles. Given my mileage is likely to be less than previous years with far fewer track days (and no Techno-Classica Essen trip unfortunately), I'll go for the 5k with the option to increase to 7.5k miles at any time during the policy year with an extra pro-rata cost.

It is likely I could get a much lower cost with shopping around but wanting an option to do the odd insured track day does restrict my choice at present, plus they are "the devil I know"

I could not put it on our family fleet policy with LV because of rating and value and (track cover). I'll take a look at other fleet policies in September when LV renews in case I want to be able to add the SRS in the future but I've found LV very good on policy points e.g. repairs, windscreen replacements and short-term additional drivers.

Only another 150 miles to complete running-in..
 
Update on insurance, I thought I should try the Club's insurer who came up at ÂŁ1,971 for 5k miles. I think I'll stay with Classic Line...
 
I had my dealer "Guru" experience today covering any questions on the car's features. Being difficult I wanted to see how to change a centre lock wheel and I had a really helpful session in the workshop. This reminded me that although I have a Nutcracker set of tools they should only be used if I can't find someone to do it properly in a workshop. We also covered the emergency procedure requiring only 100 Nm torque which was perhaps more useful to learn.

This afternoon it was exhaust tip time because I use JCR noise reducing tips at Thruxton and the fixings can get quite rusty. So off they came and I smeared the threads with copper grease and replaced them. Interestingly (perhaps not to all) the tips are made by Akrapovic in Slovenia. The bolt is a pain to get to versus the standard 718 4.0L tips with easier access.

Up to 850 miles today so I should be run in by the end of next week.

My salesman said they had not got any allocation for 2025 build and he understood end of production was June 2025. This is in line with my German friends' understanding and I assume he was not repeating back to me what I had said in December.
 
I received an allocation at the end of December based on an order/deposit placed late November. OPC spoke with PCGB first who indicated allocation would be forthcoming if an order was placed. They have no further allocations as yet. Similar message from another OPC.
Build was originally mid Feb - now slipped to early March.
Clearly better value in a lightly used example but nothing close to a colour/ specification that I could live with long term.

Guards Red,WP, PCCB, Buckets plus a load of completely unnecessary bits and pieces on the basis it will be the last new Porsche I buy. Did the Porsche Experience in one this week which confirmed I’d made the right decision 👍
 
I visited Center Gravity today to get the suspension alignment done. As expected ex-factory it was all over the place. I have never had a car from the factory with in-spec alignment. I am on the factory tour in April so will have to remember to ask to see how they test.

Rides better and doesn’t stray off centre, a little more weight on steering, tyre pressures increase more evenly on road.

I also discovered Dunlop are so pleased with their Sport Max tyres that they put their name in the sipes.

I’m staying over at Silverstone to watch the fun and games at the Pomeroy Trophy tomorrow before heading back to Devon.

Nice I would maybe not had as much rear camber put in.
And for road use ditch those Dunlops :)

Geo are frustrating I find, that's now too much on the road and yet no where near enough on track.
I would have gone more road bias for a nicer road car and drive round that on track as I guess you won't do many ?

I had -2.2 on my 718 Spyder I took it back to below -2 was much nicer to drive on the road. Anything over -1.7 on the road is lost tyre.
 
The rain relented at Silverstone but I guess the car needs a clean.
