What is the point of these?

There are 2 rubber trims in a turbo/S2 badge panel positioned at the front of the headlight pods.
They don't appear to do anything, or perhaps they have a purpose?

I would think they form a seal when lights up ? to stop light pods moving ? keep water out ? stop air noise ?

They were intended to wipe the headlight lenses when retracting. I cant see how they ever work though....
 
The only benefit I can see is hiding the nuts holding the badge panel and more or less protecting them from exposure to water in wet weather.
