I have had a slight wobble through the steering wheel at high speeds for a few weeks and also car felt unstable at times as if it was floating a bit.Thought maybe wheel bearings or something more serious. So went to get front wheels checked , as a starting point to finding the problem ,for balance and o/s was out by just 10g and now car is transformed in the way it drives.!

Not sure why but my S2 seems to be more sensitive to wheel balancing than any other car I have owned.

(And I know I am very fussy about wheel balancing!)

Glad all is sweetness again Nick!

The overall paskage must be that well balanced that afew stray grammes throws it out.

I have been chasing a wheel wobble that starts at 70 and stops at 80 for about a year. Can you recommend a good chain for balancing or type of machine i should be looking for? Am sure it is balance related as it feels solid at all other speeds.

Craig,

Well if it stops at 80 for about a year then you're surely OK, as long as you stop every few months or so? [;)]

OK, serious answer; having been fussy about wheel balance for a long, long time, I suspect it's less a matter of type of brand of balance machine, it's more a matter of how good the operator is. I have had wheels badly mis-balanced by people with the latest whizz-bang kit and I have had wheels balanced very precisely by blokes under the arches with very low-tech looking machines. (My favourite type place currently is a tiny, filthy, grotty looking place in East London run by a bunch of guys with more eyes than teeth but who know a heck of a lot about tyres and how to balance them.)

If you are sure that the problem is wheel balance (and you need to check other things as well as a number of things can give similar symptoms) then simply find a place which you know to be good and use them.

Finally got this sorted!! Left wheel was slightly out. Couldn't get the exact figure but mentioned something like 5g on one side and 10 g on the other? Anyway - Finally the steering wheel is rock solid with no vibration at all speeds. Well chuffed!

Only the 4th time I've had them balanced. I guess the 2 times at Kwikfit don't count though - lesson learnt!

Had a similar problem with the wheels on my 205gti years ago and in the end got the wheels balanced on the car then marked the wheel nuts accordingly so as not to mess it up when taking them off. Took about two hours and a few goes to get it right but the end result was brilliant rock solid at every speed.
