Were Cup cars road legal when new?

A discussion on another forum has come up with this question. My understanding is that cup cars (M001) were not road legal when new. Is that correct?

My understanding is that they were not road registered, so were not road legal until registered. Newer cups have more red tape, with type approval. I don't think that was applicable to early cups. Melv should know more I think.

Mine was road registered in Germany in '96, that's why it has an 'N' reg!

It just needed a sun visor and to comply with German log book details -type of tyres allowed listed, incl Pirelli 'C' !!

To get MOT in this country, just needed side repeater lights wired up.

Of course, needs road legal tyres, plates and tax!!

So in answer to your question -yes!!

I never realised your car was road legal Melv. I've only ever seen it on the back of a trailer or on a track. Do you drive it on the road?

Thought they also needed a handbrake for mot?...did 964 versions of cups come with one fitted?

Hi Cup Car addicts!

No, Cup Cars were not road legal when new.

To have it road legal, you needed a bunch of special permissions and an engineer with some race fuel in his blood to get "TÜV" (think that´s MOT on your island). I bought mine directly from the factory, because it was a factory car, VIN 40 90 50, last one in ´90. They put in a second seat, the rear middle silencer, oil cooler fan and I got a lot of paperwork, official government permissions. E. g. that the harnesses don´t have to be officially labeled and also the points where the harnesses are hooked in don´t have to be checked by "TÜV", the license plate is allowed to be lower than normal and more BS. Also tire sizes (225/45x17 front and 255/40x17 rear) for road legal tires are part of the game. That happened in ´92. After the factory had done it, it became easier for privateers. So, more and more Cup Cars were registered.
When I got it, I took out that awful middle silencer, then I had the car set up for road legal tires (less camber!!!, especially rear axle, 0´ toe in). Driving it on the road is something special, it´s very nervous on bumps, but once used to it, it´s FUN[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]!! The faster you go, the better the car works, be careful under braking on a rough surface, the car has a tendency then to go everywhere. Using the steering wheels helps! But on the road there will always be the problem that it´s VERY stiff sprung and the shocks are the same (Do they work at all?). ARB is soft rear and second hard front that makes a car that is neutral in fast corners with little understeer in slow corners. So road use is restricted to some serious hooliganism on lone sunday mornings on twisting country roads with the morning sun shining..... Then a Cup Car on the road is dream come true, feels a liitle bit like Joey Dunlop through Kirkmichael......

Long answer for a short question, enjoy your cars!

That's odd......my side repeaters were never wired up either, I had to get this done for MOT.

Side repeaters? Don´t even have them, there are no holes in the fenders... I don´t think Cup Cars had them. Often fenders had to be replaced, maybe standard fenders were used then. Mine is road legal without side repeaters.
