Water pump failure modes?

POR1983

I am in the process of changing my 1983 944 cam and balance belts, I have a replacement second hand water pump that is only 4 years old and in good condition that i was intending to fit at the same time, however now that I have removed the belts i have found that the pump currently fitted to the car seems to be in good order, the drive wheel turns as smoothly as the drive wheel on the replacement pump and there is no lateral play, so now I am wondering is it worthwhile changing the pump?, i have owned the car for approx 10 years so the currently fitted pump is at least that old but i don't have any record of a replacement pump being fitted by previous owners, it is the modded pump with the belt guard so i guess it was replaced at some point, the car has done 100k miles so the pump has done somewhat less i guess, what are the failure modes with these pumps? do they just leak or can they seize and take out the cam belt?.

The general advice seems to be to replace the water pump at every other belt replacement. Personally, I wouldn't bother fitting a second hand pump - fit a new one and know it's good for at least the next 6 years or so...

When my pump failed it was a gradual failure, with leaking coolant.

As Giles says - I wouldn't fit a 4 year old waterpump; for the work and hassle involved in changing it, I'd bin it and fit a new one.

Sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear.

Oli.

I had a 142 Volvo that the water pump failed on....no noise, no leaks, no wobbling...but the impeller was eroded down to where it could not pump sufficient water to keep the engine from overheating. On the Volvo - changing the water pump is a 20 minute job and if you are careful, you won't even get wet [:D]

So - even though your spare may feel good, its not worth using - the work involved to change it warrants a new pump.
