water leak

Hello all

Hope someone can throw some light on this. Just got back from Lemans great drive home car drove like a dream. Did a short journey yesterday 22 miles, parked up at home and noticed from the left side that I had a stream of water coming from the rear of the car. It lost around 2 pints of water. once cooled off I toped it up to normal level and it has not dropped. A few years ago I had a new water pump so cant believe I have another one gone. The header tank does not seem to be cracked so hope someone can let me know what they think I have taken a couple of picture to try and help show where the water is coming from. Thanks Phil

As far as I know your water pump is located at the L/H rear corner of the engine, so from your pic it doesn't appear to be the problem. There are so many coolant pipes, hoses and fittings that it's impossible to say where the leak is - probably best to get the system pressure tested to find the source of the leak.

Just a thought but it would be worth getting the engine up to working temperature and checking that the expansion tank cap is sealing properly and that the attached hose isn't split or leaking at the tank connection.

Hi Philippe

My best guess would be the header tank or cap /pipes around it. This is the known weak spot and it can be hard to locate. refill and go for a run. On previous occasions owners were adamant their tank was ok, but it turned out to be the cause of the problem. As Jeff says a pressure test may help if you’re stuck.

Many thanks gents, I think I will run it to the garage and see what they come up with.Dont think I need to loose sleep over it at this stage.

Update on the water leak turns out to be expansion tank had small leak high up so changing this and some hoses, that look warn.

The he guys have recommended using VW G12+ water to refill instead of the very apparently over priced green stuff Porsche Sell. Any thoughts on this I guess it should be fine ?

Are you sure the Porsche coolant is green? Confident I put red stuff in a previous Boxster and thought it had a pink colour when my water pump on 996 C4S went last year. The problem with replacing one type with another is that I believe there are issues if mixed and flushing out the old coolant would likely mean extra work to remove the front bumper to get to the hoses at the radiators to drain them (as they seem to be at a lower point than the hoses at the rear). Extra work would surely offset the additional cost of the Porsche coolant. Remember as a club member you will get 10% off parts at OPCs.

Graeme, I agree. I always keep a refill bottle of Porsche coolant and it's definitely pink. Hope this helps. John.

 
Many thanks - The G12+ VW water is pink / red as well. What came out of my car was Green but I would think has never had the water removed not in the 15 years I have owned the car, so even if I ordered the Porsche water which is more expensive than champagne I think I will have the same problem.

If you've not used one I recommend getting a vacuum fill kit you can get them for about £30 upwards.

But you can also use it to test system for leaks before you refill.

G12 or 13 is fine
