water leak :(

Hi folks,

This morning I noticed a few drops of rain water dripping from the rear left hand side of the roof on to the rear passenger seat. (It was right in the corner.) They were only a few drops and it's the first time this has happened. I want to address this asap for obvious reasons.

I had a look at the sunroof seal and that seems fine. I raised the rear hatch and had a look at the rubber. Although its aged, it didn't appear to have any obvious holes or gaps where the water would have got through.

I'm a bit stuck as I don't think I can get to the bottom of this without removing the headlining to chase where the water is getting in from. The headlining is a little loose so could do with being refreshed anyway. (I was hoping to delay this until next year. It's loose from both sides of the roof but is starting to fall off from the rear in the middle.)

Any idea's where else I should look to trace where the water is getting in from before I resort to removing the head lining?

Also, can anyone recommend a specialist near NW London/Watford who may be able to sort the headlining out without it costing an arm and a leg?

Thanks in advance...

Hi,

In the corners there are holes with pipes connected to them that take the water away.
these can block up, so very carefully push a flexible "wire" down each of these.
DON'T push to hard ! if you push these pipes off it's a real pig.

Regards

Had a look and didn't see any holes. Where are they located? (I've not really worked on cars before so need all the help i can get!!)

It's raining at the moment and I had a look to see if its got any worse. Thankfully, it's still dry.

I also found there is a section of plastic (?) trim in the middle of the picture attached which appears 'broken'. I had a look on the other side and it was exactly the same so not sure if its broken or designed that way. Any idea's?

Around the sunroof "gutter"; you really need to lift the roof out to get to the front two. Carefully pour water down each hole, if it doesn't come out under the car then it's blocked. As already said, be very careful poking anything down the tube as they can pop off their mounting and are a pig to refix. Water leaking from high up like that is usually the sunroof drains.

Regards the leak what everyone else has siad, but the roof trim that you have pointed to in your pic, should be one piece, it sits on top of a rubber gasket a section of which seems to be missing on your car, the trim clips off and the gaskets are available, if you are unsure a decent bodyshop should be able to do the job for an hour or so labour.
Lift the sunroof out to see the drain points agter you have been to B & Q or similar and bought a grass strimmer refill line, use this to clear the drain holes (Carefully)
Jim.

Also may want to look at the boot seal where the glass actually fixes to te alloy frame. I had a leak that dripped on to the rear seat from there, I had to remove the glass from he frame and reseal it. Total pig of a job but cheaper than buying a new boot!

Easy to check just tip water on the boot but not te roof, just need a dry day though!!!
