Washer Fluid Low Level Warning Light Not Working

I have a Cayenne 3L Diesel 2016 ( 46,000 miles) and yesterday ran out of washer fluid while driving on the motorway. The low level washer fluid warning light had not come on, otherwise I would have refilled the reservoir beforehand. I guess the problem could be a faulty sensor. Any comments/suggestions please ?
