Visit to Sound Leisure, Leeds

IMG_8972.jpeg

Elaine and I recently enjoyed a great tour of a fascinating factory where hand crafted juke boxes have been manufactured by a family owned business for almost 50 years.

You can see virtually the entire process from raw wood to the finished product produced by skilled craftsmen. Many of their juke boxes are purchased by celebrities around the world.

The interest and entertainment content of this visit is very wide and inclusive, just as interesting for ladies as it is for men.

In the 1970s Sound Leisure became the first British company to design, develop and build a commercially viable jukebox platform. They went on to pioneer the early development of digitised music platforms in the 1980s and were responsible for the reintroduction of vinyl jukeboxes in 2016.

It’s not only about juke boxes. There’s an interesting piece of machinery on display that was used in the creation of Barnes Wallace’s dambuster bouncing bomb. There are also pinball machines, neon lights and more on display.

The cost is £12 per person for the factory tour, led by family members of management. Light refreshments are included.

Visits can be arranged to take place at our convenience during weekdays, evenings.

I’m propose organising a visit or two in September but before I book and pay a deposit I would like expressions of interest and what time of day or Saturday morning you would prefer. Please state your preferences on the forum.

In the words of Sound Leisure Ltd.

In the 1970s, we became the first British company to design, develop, and build a commercially viable jukebox platform. We went on to pioneer the early development of digitised music platforms in the 1980s and were responsible for the reintroduction of vinyl jukeboxes in 2016. Today, we remain a globally recognised and respected leader in our sector, with countless patents and industry-firsts to our name.

Our consistent success over a 40-year period, during which many long-established jukebox manufacturers such as Seeburg and Wurlitzer went out of business, is based on our ongoing commitment to developing better products and technologies and our unwavering dedication to high-quality British manufacturing.

We’ve carefully built our reputation and business over many years, and remain just as passionate, if not a little obsessive, about quality and the production process. Our success to date is entirely based on the innovation of our products and the exceptional standard of their design.

Our factory is truly a place of wonder, and we’re proud champions of UK manufacturing! Take a tour, and you can literally see the entire jukebox production process under one roof, from raw wood entering at one end to the finished masterpieces leaving the other. To ensure quality is built into every component, we complete as much of the process as is humanly possible in-house, right down to manufacturing our own printed circuit boards.

We continue to hand-build every jukebox in our UK factory, allowing us to develop our workforce’s skills. Here, the expert knowledge and guidance of our experienced senior team blends with the energy and passion of new apprentices and recruits.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Roger, that sounds fascinating - we love going to places where people make things. On that basis we would prefer to go during a weekday at a time when making is happening, but happy to go any time. We already have a commitment Sept 10-15 but recognise that you won't be able to fit in with everybody! Great idea, many thanks.

Hi Roger, that sounds an excellent trip out, it will bring back happy memories of when I worked during school holidays in amusement arcades in Hornsea. Saturday mornings or during week are both good for us, would nice to see the place working.

Greetings Pop Pickers.

Roger.

What a brilliant idea for a visit!

Mrs T and I would be well up for this one - please add us to the list when you get around to it!

We are scheduled for the WOTY in September so hope the dates won't clash.

Thanks & best regards.
