VIN number

Due to the amount of paint built up I'm having trouble reading the VIN number off the front right shock mounting.
I think it is 924131133, can anybody confirm if this is the right number of digits, and where I can find out more about its history from?
There is no VIN plate in the windscreen
Is there anywhere else that the VIN number is available?
Thanks

That's not enough numbers.

It should be something like WPOZZZ92Z********

I can't remeber exact details but the WPO and ZZZ are something to do with the territory, the 92Z is model type, then there's 2 letters for model year, then 6 numbers, the last 4 of which are the chssis number for that year. I'm doing that from memory so it may be a bit wrong, but basically that's what you should get. Or was it different on earlier cars????? - I'm comparing it to my 1988 924S when possibly the world standard for numbering changed to the longer numbers. I can look it up for you if no one comes forward with further details, just haven't got the book to hand as I write this

You should find a paper sticker in the boot, roughly behind the number plate, with the same info on it.

W Means the car was made in Germany
PO Identifies it as a Porsche
ZZZ means "Rest of the world" (USA cars use 3 other digits here)

Sorry Mark you are wong.
You are using the data for post 1980 cars. A 1978 924 for instance would have a chassis number like 9248100001 to 924819474 for Europe and 9248200001 to 11638 for US. tha basis is the model '924' then the year '8' for 1978 and then the market/type '1' for Europe and '2' for US and Canada and '3' for Japan. The rest is the sequential number. A 5 digit sequential followed by an * is correct. The bit that I donn't understand is the '1' after '924' that is where the year number should be and they didn't make the 924 in 1971!! My guess is that you have missed a digit before the '1'.

Geoff Ives. (looking for a new anorak)

WPOZZZ came in for 1981.

Check out the Haynes manual - a good starting point for lots of things on these cars (public libraries have this if you want to try before you buy).
The books by Peter Morgan and Mike Cotton are useful too.

I don't have the windscreen tag - probably doesn't survive a windscreen change but there should be a plate on the driver's side (RHD) wing inside the bonnet behind the firewall with vehicle details.

If you're running a numbers check you should check the engine number too.

The book that I used for the reply I gave about vin /chassis numbers was 'Original Porsche 924/944/968' by Peter Morgan .... ISBN 1-901432-05-X. This bok is availavble from Club Shop. It not only contains all the facts that you may need on the 4 cylinder front engine cars but it is also 'a very good read'.
During my period as Register Director I needed to have information about all Porsche models at my finger tips and I found the 'Original' series an invaluable tool.

Thanks for the responses.
So if it starts 924 I'm looking at a pre 1981 car? Are there 6 digits after the '924' or 7?
Unfortunately its a race car thats been sprayed a few times so not easy to decifer.
I'm going to have a good look over it this weekend to try to tie up some of the numbers (dont have a V5)

If you have a digital camera, put an image of the vin number on here and we can try to identify it.
