Hello all

My car has just come back from the bodyshop after a 2 week stay, as soon as I started driving away I could feel a vibration coming through the engine/gearbox.
The engine is running fine and I have checked the balance shaft timing which is also ok.
It starts at about 2000 rpm+ and continues through the rev range, you can feel it through the pedals and gear stick, there is no heavy clunking or grinding noises just a sensation that something isnt quite right.
The heat shield under the exhaust manifold starts to resonate at the same time and it has never done this before.
Do the balance shafts have bearings that can wear?

Always looking for the simple/no cost fix; does it vibrate whilst stationary? I wonder if the handbrake is just binding after 2 weeks pulled up tight in the bodyshop...one solution to this is to find somewhere to reverse a good way until the pads come off the discs properly.
 
The hand break and breaks are fine, and yes it does do it while stationary, thats why I was thinking it was something to do with the balance shaft bearings, or is there something else that I am missing?

You don't say why it was in the body shop so everything is a guess at this point. I'd start looking at things that may have been removed and reinstalled to provide access for work - exhaust system perhaps loose on the hangers and vibrating on the torque tube or something like that? Or as per Graeme - engine mounts?
 
Car was in for some work on a blistered rear arch and was fine when I dropped it off, just cant work out what has gone wrong if its been sat in a yard/paint shop for 2 weeks, surely the engine mounts cant deteriorate if the car has been stood?
 
They can - anything being squashed by several hundredweight of metal suffers from it eventually. They might just have reached their time. Are they the originals?
 
I might be wrong but I think worn engine mounts show as vibration at tickover and goes away when engine revs increase.I would check how they raised/supported the car to do the work - on transmission could have damaged its mounting.

NO never going back ever again. That is a story in itself getting my arches and sills welded, took the car to a place in Wakefield that is a specialist apparently and sell over priced and horribly detailed cars (dont want to name them!!) they subbed it out to a body shop last October. Paint starts to blister 8 weeks later and took me another 10 weeks of haggling to get it sorted, picked the car up yesterday and the vibration is there.

Its something I'll have to sort on my own cos Im never going back there again.
Havn't had chance to get underneath and check the exhaust system yet though so that is the next job.
 
I think we all recognise the "signature" of that alleged specialist....

Simon (944man) has recommended a Porsche independent in S Yorks - can't remember their name though.
 
I would get it to a Porsche specialist for them to check over , they will also be able to inspect underneath and see if any problems where it was supported while the work was being done.
