Very early Boxster. Confusion over build date

Great that you are making progress Charles. I wouldn't mind betting that most of the early production was LHD for US and Europe, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if yours wasn't still a very early RHD. Most car manufacturers don't make it even more difficult for themselves when introducing a new car on the line by muddling up LHD and RHD from the start.

The last 4 digits on my VIN are 1277 so actually a bit behind yours Charles. It must have been put on a really quick car transporter for the journey to the UK!

Interestingly I also have a mismatch between date of first registration with the V5 showing 3/1/97, the service book has 2/1/97 and the MOT history check website showing 31/12/97!

Sorry that was just an example mine, from memory, I’m in Kwick fit, was 1435. I also had the same problem with the DVLA site. Mine is confirmed as registered on the 17th jan 1997 however the DVLA site claims December 1997. Also the earliest known car was also registered in December 1997 according to the DVLA so there is something incorrect with their systems.

Quoting from John Tipler’s Boxster and Cayman The Complete History ‘The production 1997-model Boxster was ready for sale in the early autumn of 1996 - although the assembly of right-hand drive cars did not start until December 1996, and the first deliveries to the UK and USA were not until January 1997’

So it looks as though both our cars are from the first month of RHD production and UK registration (with the possible exception of press cars).

This is now probably useless information for you, but on my 1998 Model Year 986 Boxster (C16) which I collected from the factory at Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart on Monday 13th July 1998, it shows on the bottom of the roll bar by the seat belt reel (after unscrewing and removing the carpet panel behind the driver's seat) a seven letter & digit code/25.6.98 written by hand in what looks like a white indelible felt tip pen against the black painted roll bar. I wouild imagine the date 25.6.98 is the date of the roll bar manufacture.

Hi Charles, your car is early but the first UK cars had Pxxx EGM registrations and were registered to Porsche GB. The P168 EGM car is not the first as registered in January and the early cars were all registered Dec 1 1996. There were 3 press cars. P158 EGM, P159 EGM and P162 EGM. P162 EGM has been scrapped. Hope this helps and hope the car is doing well.
