Valvoline VR1

Does anybody use this oil, Opie have suggested a 20w50 weight considering my mileage so im looking for some feedback.

Some racers use VR1, personally I use Millers CFS 10w-60 in my S2 and whatever decent semi-synth 10w-40 I can find at the time for the 968 (Mobil S for example).

Its good to see that theyre now suggesting an appropriate oil, rather than being guided by the nonesense in the manufactured supplied application lists (0w- for a 924S according to Mobil, for example)).

I use it routinely in my Triumph Stag and it has much higher levels of ZDDP (an anti wear additive) that the older Stag engine needs. Whether the Porsche engines will also benefit from it I have no idea.

Didin't know Opie sold Valvoline Oils, 20W50 seems a bit thick to me for winter use, whats your current mileage? Are you using a lot of oil?

Ah just to clarify they only quoted the grade not the brand I dont use the car over the winter, oh and my mileage is 157k

The W in 20W stands for Winter, not weight. 20W- is good for constant -10 degrees centigrade so its perfectly acceptable as a year-round oil in our climate.

Acceptable - perhaps, optimum - definitely not. A 20w may be rated down to -10 but I bet it would be pretty borderline on start-up (20w being the second thickest at low temps after 25w) and you cant escape the fact that a lower winter rated oil would get to working temp sooner + therefore better winter wear protection.

Of course if 944scott is not using his car in the winter it may not matter much, although if it were me I'd be more happy with a 10w50 like Fuchs Titan Race R, although its not cheap.

+1 for Valvoline VR1

Used to run castrol 15W40 (PO put that in). VR1 cut the oil consumption substantially and quietened the top-end. I also don't plan to use over the winter.
